CLEVELAND, Ohio – The death of a Cuyahoga County Jail inmate has been ruled a homicide, authorities said.
Tasha Grant, 39, of Cleveland died from “physical restraint in the setting of congestive heart failure,” a spokesman for the medical examiner’s office said Thursday.
County officials said Grant was transported from the jail to MetroHealth Medical Center on May 2 because of “preexisting conditions that resulted in an emergency.”
She died at the hospital three days later, said Jennifer Ciaccia, a county spokeswoman.
Sheriff’s deputies are investigating. A spokesman for the medical examiner’s office declined to comment on the case.
Grant was in the jail after she was charged with assaulting two UH Southwest General Medical Center police officers in September. A county grand jury indicted her on the charges in October.
While in jail, she had been undergoing testing for mental health issues, according to court records.
Grant is the third inmate to die at the county jail this year. Jennifer Wade, 41, died Feb. 23, while Nathan Kinney, 27, died May 6. County officials said their deaths stemmed from medical emergencies.
