The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning customers about nearly 90,000 bed rail products that were sold on sites such as Amazon and Walmart even after determining they pose a risk of serious injury or death.
The warning stems from an incident in October 2023 when an 81-year-old woman in Ohio died in her home after becoming entrapped between an OasisSpace bed rail and the mattress, the statement reads.
The bed rails were distributed and sold by Gold Kernal LLC, which was doing business as the online seller Oasis Space of Wilmington, Delaware.
The CPSC issued a “Notice of Violation” to the company regarding four models of OasisSpace adult portable bed rails because they failed to meet the safety requirements of the “Safety Standard for Adult Bed Rails.”
Gold Kernal has not agreed to recall these bed rails or offer a remedy to customers, the commission said.
The warning concerns the following models:
Model number F042: Adjustable height from about 28.5 to 42 inches; 17 inches wide. Made of white metal tubing with a black foam rubber grip handle and blue suction cup feet
Model number F127: Adjustable height from about 12 to 18 inches; 13 inches wide. Made of silver metal tubing with a black foam rubber grip handle
Model number G132: Adjustable height from about 18 to 22 inches; 13 inches wide. Made with black metal tubing with a black foam rubber grip handle and a removable gray fabric pouch
Model number G286: Adjustable height from about 16 inches high and 38 inches wide. Made of silver metal tubing and can fold downward when not in use
In total, 86,100 bed rails are included in this warning and were sold online on OasisSpace, Amazon and Walmart from July 2019 through February of this year for between $30 and $108.
The products have also been found for sale by third-party sellers and on other websites, including eBay.
“CPSC urges consumers to stop using the bed rails immediately, regardless of their date of manufacture, and dispose of them,” the statement reads. “Do not sell or give away these hazardous bed rails.”
