Davina McCall's love life from 'traumatic' divorce to sexless marriage comments

Davina McCall has recently shared the joyful news of her engagement to celebrity hair stylist Michael Douglas, with whom she’s been in a relationship since 2018, after years of friendship. Michael was by Davina’s side, now 57, as she recovered from significant surgery last year following the discovery of a benign brain tumour during a routine health check-up linked to her advocacy for menopause awareness. Set to be her third husband, the renowned hairstylist joins Davina’s romantic journey. The ex-Big Brother host hasn’t shied away from discussing the ups and downs of her romantic life over time. Here we take a look at the Stranded on Honeymoon Island presenter’s dating history. Davina experienced what she describes as a ‘traumatic divorce’ from Matthew Robertson, reflecting on the emotional chaos that ensued after their 17-year marriage ended. Together they have three children: Holly, Tilly, and Chester, reports the Mirror . In a candid interview with You Magazine in 2020, Davina opened up: “Going through a divorce is a traumatic experience and it is something that needs to be navigated as carefully as possible.” She added,:”Two years on, we have both grown as people and we can now co-parent happily and acknowledge that it was the right thing for us to go through even though it involved absolute emotional turmoil.” Previously, Davina admitted that she and her ex-husband remained together “for the sake of their kids”, yet despite never having arguments, she also acknowledges that they “never spoke”. “In the end, we were living completely separate lives. We were hardly talking. It wasn’t arguing. We never argued. We just lived separate lives. And we weren’t happy,” Davina shared with The Times. She further elaborated: “‘I thought, ”I just want to be happy, and this is really sad. We’re in a marriage and we’re in it for the kids. We love our kids, but we’re just not happy.”’ It’s reported that Davina first encountered legendary guitarist Eric Clapton while she was working in a restaurant. At that point, Davina was grappling with a heroin addiction, confessing that she was in a bad state. “You name it, I took it. Cocaine, ecstasy and heroin. Because of my mistakes I am less judgmental of others,” she confessed to The Mirror. However, it was Eric, who was 23 years her senior, who persuaded Davina to tackle her addiction. The ‘Layla’ songwriter encouraged Davina to seek help from Narcotics Anonymous. With Eric’s support, Davina managed to overcome her addiction and transitioned towards a healthier lifestyle. She has since spearheaded campaigns about women’s health and released 14 fitness DVDs. Recently, Davina candidly admitted that she believes a marriage doesn’t require sex to maintain intimacy. Speaking to Good Housekeeping, Davina explained that couples can still enjoy naked time together without engaging in sexual activity. She remarked: “As long as both people want a sexless relationship. The problem is, is if you want a sexless relationship and the other person doesn’t, then the other person is being asked to sacrifice something that they will miss and then potentially go and look for somewhere else. That won’t work in the end.” She continued: “You can have beautiful intimacy together without the act of sex itself. You can hug naked and both know that it’s not going to lead to sex. I think sometimes people don’t want to be touched or hugged naked because they think, ‘Oh, then they’re going to want to have sex with me.’ That’s when you’re not in the same place.” Davina and her beau Michael, 49, are said to have got engaged just before their trip to the Burning Man festival in Nevada three weeks prior. This revelation follows shortly after Michael hinted at impending nuptials to The Mirror. Speaking at the National Television Awards, he shared: “There could be wedding bells on the way, who knows, I’m not going anywhere else if that’s why you mean. But we’re in no rush for any of that, we just enjoy each others company.” The couple’s romance blossomed years after first meeting when Michael was styling Davina’s hair during her Big Brother presenting days. They made their relationship public in 2019. Davina will return to screens with Stranded on Honeymoon Island from 9pm on BBC One. The series hopeful singletons are placed on an island before being matched up and married.
