David Ornstein Shares Honest Rangers Verdict on Danny Rohl Appointment

Rangers manager Danny Rohl is a "really good coach", and one who has the potential to reach the top level following his arrival at Ibrox on Monday. That is the opinion of widely-respected football reporter David Ornstein, of The Athletic, who has shared his verdict on Rangers' appointment of the former Sheffield Wednesday coach. Former Rangers forward Kris Boyd has labelled the club's search for a new manager as a 'shambles' , after deals fell through to secure Steven Gerrard or Kevin Muscat as Russell Martin's successor, but Orstein believes that the Gers have recruited a head coach with the potential to match the lofty ambitions of the club. David Ornstein Praises Rohl After Rangers Appointment Rohl arrives at Ibrox with Rangers sat in sixth, with just one league win from their first eight under Martin, meaning that pressure is on the former Southampton coach to get the Glasgow outfit climbing up the SPL table quickly. Although Rohl was not Rangers' first-choice appointment, Ornstein believes that the former Sheffield Wednesday coach, who kept the Owls safe from relegation to the third tier of English football in his first season in charge, has the credentials to become a "top coach" at Ibrox. Ornstein told Sky Sports News: "Yeah, it was Steven Gerrard initially (Rangers' first choice). And then Rohl did come into the equation. And of course, there were some other candidates, like (Kevin) Muscat, but Rohl has got the nod, despite the toxicity and the febrile atmosphere at Ibrox at the moment. "But this is a really good coach, 36-years-old. He's sort of shown himself at Sheffield Wednesday in the second tier, but also as assistant for the Germany national team, Southampton, Bayern, Munich. "And you know, they're scarred by the Russell Martin experience, the Rangers fans, but Danny Rohl has the potential to be a top coach, and I'm sure Rangers will be hoping and thinking that finally, at the end of this protracted process, that they've got themselves a good fit. And boy, do they need to get winning matches." Former Rangers Star Josh Windass Praises Rohl Former Rangers forward Josh Windass shone for Sheffield Wednesday under Rohl, enjoying one of his best career seasons to date in the 2024/25 campaign under the German at Hillsborough, scoring 13 goals and notching six assists in 47 outings. In the summer, Windass heaped praise on his former Sheffield Wednesday boss, going as far as to say that Rohl is the best coach he has worked under so far during his 12-year professional footballing career. Of Rohl, Windass told the Open Goal podcast: "Top class. Best I’ve worked with, tactically, by a mile… it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen, to be honest. "He’ll do a match plan, showing us what positions we should be in for mid-third pressing, building up from goal kicks etc. And then on the Monday, he’ll get those images up and compare them and if you didn’t follow the match plan, he’ll ask you why. I’ve got a lot of freedom to play… but it’s within a structure.” With Ornstein and Rangers legend Windass both in agreement over Rohl's coaching credentials, Gers fans ought to be excited about what the former Bayern Munich coach will bring to Ibrox.
