Hempel has entered the contest six or seven times, he said. While he has not placed, his piece has been selected to be part of the traveling exhibit each time, including several past times placing as an honorable mention.
His work can be found at tomhempelwatercolors.com. Hempel is a Quad-Cities native who began painting at the age of 12, according to his website. After stopping for 12 years after graduating high school, he resumed painting and sold his first painting in 1975.
IWS was founded in 1977 and now has more than 150 members, according to its website.
