Daniel Island developer donates land to Charleston for park

DANIEL ISLAND — Developer Frank Brumley and his family are donating the last remaining undeveloped land on the island to the city for recreational space. The donation, totaling about 62 acres across several parcels, was announced during a City Council committee last month. “It's an incredibly generous offer and act on his part,” said Mayor William Cogswell, adding that the city would “figure out how to say thank you to him.” The land, located off Oak Left Street beyond the Daniel Island Property Owners' Association Crow’s Nest pool, is next to several existing sports fields the city already owns and freely leases to a soccer academy and lacrosse association. “Hopefully, we can do something with these fields,” said City Councilman Boyd Gregg, who represents most of the island community. “Those leagues have improved those fields down there at their own cost.” Brumley told The Post and Courier on Oct. 30 the donated land represents the last of the 4,000 acres he and his brother bought in 1997 and developed into the 3,000-lot master planned community. The last 12 lots at The Retreat, the enclave’s final neighborhood, just hit the market. “I would rather not see any more development,” Brumley said. “It made sense.” Brumley, who also helped develop Kiawah Island and Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms, said he might not be a Charleston native, but he’s called the city home for more than 50 years. “We’ve been a part of this community for a long time,” he said. “We want to be good citizens.”
