Damien Duff to Celtic? How fans would react to appointment of Ireland legend

It’s been a frustrating time recently for Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, with the signing of Sebastian Tounekti AFTER their shock Champions League exit annoying the Ulsterman after a less-than-satisfactory summer transfer window.

Speculation about his long-term future continues to bubble in the background.

And already there are whispers about who might replace the four-time Scottish Premiership winning boss when he does decide to leave Parkhead for a second time.

One name that has cropped up is a former Bhoys coach, who has gone on to win the League of Ireland title as a manager with Shelbourne.

Former Ireland winger Damien Duff had a spell in Glasgow, first coaching the reserve team and then as part of the first-team backroom staff.

His exploits on this side of the Irish Sea have marked him out as someone with serious managerial ability. Not only did he lead Shels to their first Premier Division title in 18 years, but he achieved European qualification two seasons in a row.

And former Scotland international Pat Nevin reckons his name being thrown in the mix would excite the Parkhead faithful.

“Celtic fans would love Damien Duff,” he told BetIdeas.

“I can remember once a lot of people said that Henrik Larsson would be a great manager for Celtic. And then people started watching his managerial career and they went, maybe not.

“Celtic see themselves as as big a club as any Premier League side in England. They just go for the best man. Back to that one again.

“You never know, Ange Postocoglou might be available again by that time – by the end of the season.

“It looks like Brendan will last until the end of this season, and you wouldn’t be surprised if he left then.

“Celtic will scour the planet again, and they might not go as far as Australia this time, but Damien will be a name, but he’ll be a name on a pretty long list.”
