Dallas Cowboys lose promising rookie in unexpected fashion going into Week 4 after getting playing time in back to back games

One of the biggest surprises from the Dallas Cowboys’ final roster decisions before the start of the 2025 NFL season was rookie cornerback Zion Childress being cut. Though he was an undrafted free agent signing, he quickly established himself as a roster candidate with a strong training camp and even better preseason. The Cowboys were later able to sign Childress to the practice squad. The problem? Carrying players on the practice squad that you want to keep is a dangerous business. Heading into Week 4, Dallas is paying the price for it in unexpected fashion. According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, the Houston Texans are signing Childress off of the Cowboys’ practice squad. NFL rules allow teams to “poach” players from other team’s practice squads as long as they’re signed to a 53-man roster.

Childress’ signing to the Texans comes after back-to-back gameday elevations

The Cowboys’ loss comes right as Childress’ role with the team was starting to increase. Childress, a former Kentucky Wildcat, was elevated from the practice squad in back-to-back games. He played a combined 19 snaps of special teams in the two-game stretch. Before the transaction, there seemed to be a chance the Cowboys would promote him to the 53-man roster once his gameday elevations ran out. Now, he’s headed to Dallas’ in-state rival, instead. The Cowboys’ cornerback room is one of the worst on the team and losing anyone should be considered a blow. However, Childress was unlikely to play defense anytime soon. Matt Eberflus signed Reddy Steward to man the backup slot job, which was expected to be Childress’ after the preseason.

Additionally, Cowboys cornerbacks Caelen Carson and Shavon Revel Jr. will be eligible to return as early as next week after starting the season on injured lists.
