Dakota Johnson addresses criticism of her red carpet naked dresses

Dakota Johnson loves a naked dress. As the cover star of Vogue Germany‘s Nov. 2025 issue, Johnson chatted about her red carpet style and her penchant for the sheer looks that consistently land her among Hollywood’s best dressed. As for those naysayers who claim that the 36-year-old should be covering up more regularly, Johnson couldn’t care less. In response to those calling her sheer looks “too sexy,” Johnson candidly replies, “I really don’t care.” That’s not to say she wears every single barely-there look that comes her way. “Sometimes those dresses look good on me. But there are also some we’ve tried on that didn’t look good at all.” She continues, “It all depends on the shape, the finish, the color, and everything else. So if I find a beautiful dress that I feel comfortable in, of course I want to wear it!” “And it’s fun to wear a sexy dress,” she quips. In the interview, Johnson shares how she was raised in an environment that embraced healthy body image. As the daughter of actress Melanie Griffith, Johnson explains, “My mom was just very open about the topic of bodies.” She continues, “She taught us how to take care of our bodies and love them, and that our bodies are beautiful. And I think that’s something really important for a young girl because we’re constantly told that we’re not good enough … That was a huge gift she gave me.” The actress continues to be, however, a huge proponent of the naked dress trend — and she looks fabulous in them. Most recently, she wore a striking Gucci number made of sheer blue lace, including a full-skirted bottom and a totally see-through long-sleeve top, to the Zurich Film Festival. She also chose a sheer Gucci dress in New York City at the beginning of September, crafted of black lace with a visible balconette bra and string bikini panties beneath. Last May and June also saw Johnson doubling down on the barely-there dress trend. She wore a Nensi Dojaka sheer dress for “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” followed by a transparent glittering Gucci gown for the Cannes Film Festival. Whether she’s slipping into a nearly nude design or a completely covered-up look, Johnson’s confident approach to dressing however she sees fit is actually quite refreshing. And it doesn’t hurt that her style is always on point.
