On Thursday, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott mourned the death of his teammate, Marshawn Kneeland. Kneeland’s Death Announced on Thursday Hours after the news that Kneeland, the team’s defensive end, had died at 24, Prescott opened up about the sudden loss in an interview with CBS Sports Texas. “It’s been a very tough day,” Prescott said, adding that he found out about Kneeland’s passing “early [Thursday] morning.” Kneeland died on Wednesday night, but his death was not publicly announced until Thursday. “Tragic loss, I hurt. Heavy, heavy heart today,” Prescott continued. “I hurt for Marshawn, I hurt for his family, I hurt for his girlfriend, I hurt for every single one of my teammates. This is a pain you don’t wish upon anybody. You wish none of us had to go through this. You wish Marshawn didn’t have to go through what he went through.” A ‘Triggering Day’ “Hug and love on those that you do,” Prescott advised, adding that Thursday was a “triggering day for many reasons.” Authorities in Texas are investigating Kneeland’s death as a possible suicide. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), officers attempted to stop a vehicle due to a traffic violation around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, but the car refused to stop and authorities gave chase. The chase was soon terminated when they lost sight of the vehicle. However, around 10:39 p.m., officers from the Frisco Police Department found a car matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle wrecked on the Dallas Parkway. Witnesses reported that a male suspect fled on foot. Audio Details Tragic Episode Dispatch audio obtained by CNN revealed officers speaking with Kneeland’s girlfriend at the time of the pursuit. “We’re talking to the girlfriend. She’s trying to call his agent but we’re trying to get her to call him first. But she’s saying he is armed and has a history of mental illness, and her quote was ‘he will end it all,’” an officer said on the recording. “We have a lieutenant calling in from Plano advising that the NFL is calling Plano PD and the subject is texting his family goodbye.” The Cowboys confirmed Kneeland’s death in a statement released on Thursday morning. “It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the team said. “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
