A father has branded a ham and cheese sandwich served on a Ryanair flight as “the worst airplane food ever.”
Declan Minogue, who was returning to Dublin from Portugal’s Faro airport with his wife Claire after a week-long holiday, decided to order something to eat during the flight.
However, the 63-year-old from Lusk was left disappointed when he received a €6.80 Hot Ham and Cheese Panini from the in-flight menu that he described as “not even fit for Oliver Twist.”
He expressed his shock at finding just two small pieces of ham and a minuscule amount of cheese inside the sandwich, which had no butter.
Despite finishing the ‘tasteless’ sandwich, which he likened to “something out of Oliver Twist,” he was still hungry and had to purchase more food upon landing.
The father-of-two took to social media to share a picture of the disappointing sandwich, describing it as “shocking and insulting.” The photo shows the opened sandwich with only one slice of ham cut in half and a tiny amount of melted cheese—barely covering half the bread.
Social media users were quick to express their shock at the ‘appalling’ meal, with some advising against buying food on flights.
Feeling ‘massively ripped off,’ the retail manager vowed never to purchase food on a Ryanair flight again.
Declan, a resident of Lusk, Dublin, Ireland, expressed his disappointment, saying: “It was the worst airplane food ever. It was a massive rip off.
“I was shocked when I saw it,” he continued. “I got it and I opened it and couldn’t believe it, so I took a picture. It had two slices of ham and the tiniest bit of cheese, and the cheese was like butter.
“There was no substance to it. I was stunned. It was like something out of Oliver Twist. You wouldn’t be asking for more than that. It didn’t taste good. It was very bland, but I was starving, so what could I do?”
Declan further added: “You wouldn’t really think you can mess up a ham and cheese sandwich. I left the flight feeling quite hungry and had to get something from the airport.
“I know it’s a budget airline, but you’d expect better service. I wouldn’t buy anything on Ryanair’s flights again. The standards are a disaster.
“I didn’t complain about it, which I should have. My other half wouldn’t let me.”
The comments section was filled with users expressing their shock. One user exclaimed: “Disgusting.”
Another user questioned: “What the hell is that? That’s ridiculous.”
A third user simply stated: “Gross.”
Other users advised against buying food on a flight. One user suggested: “Never buy the food on board. Bring your own and cold drinks. Much nicer.”
Another user recommended: “Take your own sandwiches. We never buy food on the plane.”
Ryanair has been contacted for a response.
