Wizards of the Coast recently rolled out two new sets for Dungeons and Dragons: the Starter Set and Stranger Things: Welcome to the Hellfire Club. They sent me both, and I reviewed them during the latest episode of Pop! Goes the Culture! During the review segment, which has been clipped below, I talk about both the Starter Set and Hellfire Club set. The Starter Set essentially turns D&D into a conventional tabletop game. The barrier of entry is lower than ever thanks to pre-made characters, cards for common spells and items, and multiple maps. It makes a D&D one-shot a viable game night option. Stranger Things: Welcome to the Hellfire Club takes a similar approach, with a Stranger Things theme. Or, specifically, an 80s theme. There are character sheets based on the characters played by the characters in the Netflix show, and a map based on the world from their campaign. They’ve also added new monsters, like the Demogorgon Dragon. It’s all done in the vintage 80s aesthetic, giving 5e a retro feel. Listen to my full review for my thoughts on the D&D Starter Set and Stranger Things collab, which are both available now. You can hear more discussions about TTRPGs and other entertainment during our weekly show, Pop! Goes the Culture!
