Cyprus government accused of failing disabled citizens over pension delays

NICOSIA — The government is facing sharp criticism from disability advocates over its handling of pension eligibility for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses.

The president of the national disability confederation condemned what she described as a “complete betrayal” of vulnerable citizens, following the failure to conclude parliamentary discussions on incapacity pensions for individuals who have not completed 36 months of employment.

She said these individuals are living in poverty and social exclusion, and accused authorities of neglecting their basic rights. The issue has sparked frustration among advocacy groups, who argue that the current system unfairly penalizes those unable to meet rigid work requirements due to health conditions.

The stalled debate has reignited calls for urgent reform and greater political accountability.
