NICOSIA — Employment in Cyprus’ Broad Public Sector rose to 77,314 in the second quarter of 2025, according to figures released Monday by the Statistical Service.
The General Government accounted for 72,275 employees, while Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies employed 5,039. Within General Government, employment was distributed among the central government (55,208), non-profit organizations (11,185), and local authorities (5,882).
Compared to the same quarter last year, total public sector employment increased by 2.1%, or 1,600 workers. Central government employment rose by 1.5% (969 workers), and local authorities saw a sharp increase of 28.2% (1,295 workers). Employment in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies fell by 11.6% (664 workers), a decline attributed to the July 2024 establishment of District Local Government Organisations (DLGOs), which absorbed Sewerage and Water Boards.
Quarter-over-quarter, employment rose by 0.4% (280 workers). Local authorities added 301 workers (5.4%), and Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies gained 77 (1.6%). Central government employment declined slightly by 98 workers (0.1%).
The DLGOs employed 1,063 workers in Q2, up 14.7% from the previous quarter. Municipalities added 165 workers (4.6%), while employment in other local authorities remained unchanged.
