NEW DELHI: Cyclone Montha has weakened into a deep depression over coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Telangana, but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue in several eastern and central Indian states until Friday. The weather system, moving north-northwestwards, is expected to further weaken into a depression over south Chhattisgarh within a few hours. Telangana: Red alert for heavy rainfall The IMD has placed Telangana under red, orange, and yellow alerts as widespread rain continues to lash the state. Red alert: Very heavy to extremely heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40–50 kmph), is likely in Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Siddipet, and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri districts. Orange alert: Heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated locations in Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Adilabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Jagtial, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, and Suryapet. Yellow alert: Light to moderate rain is expected in Nizamabad, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Rangareddy, Medak, and Kamareddy districts. West Bengal: Heavy rain till October 31 After Cyclone Montha’s weakening, West Bengal is likely to experience intense rainfall until Friday (October 31), after which conditions will gradually improve. October 29: Light to moderate rain with isolated heavy showers and gusty winds (up to 55 kmph) over South Bengal districts — South and North 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur. October 30: The rain zone will shift inland to Purulia, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Paschim Bardhaman. October 31: Heavy to very heavy rain is expected over North Bengal, including Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Darjeeling, and Alipurduar, under yellow and orange alerts. Conditions will ease from November 1, with dry weather likely to return by November 3. Andhra Pradesh: Orange alert in 12 districts The IMD has issued an orange alert for Andhra Pradesh, forecasting heavy rainfall in several coastal and interior districts. The affected regions include Prakasam, SPSR Nellore, Guntur, Palnadu, NTR, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Eluru, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Srikakulam, and Parvathipuram Manyam. Rainfall activity is expected to continue for the next 48 hours, accompanied by strong surface winds along the coastal belt. Other states: Showers likely in central and eastern India Bihar and Jharkhand: Rain likely to persist until Thursday. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim: Moderate to heavy rain forecast from October 30 to November 1. Odisha: Light to moderate rain on October 29. East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh: Widespread showers on October 29–30. Gujarat: Light to moderate rain till November 1, with isolated very heavy rain likely over Marathwada, Saurashtra, and Kutch regions until October 31. Cyclone Montha: Current position and trajectory According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, at 2330 hrs IST on October 29, 2025, the deep depression was centered near latitude 19.6°N and longitude 80.7°E, approximately: 110 km southwest of Kanker 150 km west-northwest of Jagdalpur 150 km east-southeast of Chandrapur 160 km northeast of Ramagundam 240 km southeast of Nagpur The system is moving northwards across Chhattisgarh and adjoining Vidarbha and is likely to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area within the next few hours. While Montha has lost much of its cyclonic strength, widespread rainfall, strong winds, and possible flooding remain concerns for eastern and central India. The IMD has urged residents in affected districts to remain alert, avoid travel in low-lying areas, and follow advisories issued by local administrations.
