Cyclone Montha: AP, Odisha Schools Closed Amid Fears of Rainfall and Landslides

A low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked system, which is predicted to turn into a cyclonic storm named “Montha.” After intensification, it will be distinguished as a “severe cyclonic storm.” Cyclone Montha is expected to wreak havoc by causing landslides and heavy rainfall across various districts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Preparations are going on to limit the damage from the cyclonic storm to ensure locals' safety and the protection of properties. Odisha, AP Schools Announce Closure of Schools To ensure the safety of students, schools in various districts of these states have been ordered to remain shut. As per a TOI report, in Kakinada, officials have started shifting people from Hope Island to safer zones. Schools in this district will be shut from October 27 to 31 due to the prediction of incessant rainfall in the region. Apart from Kakinada, West Godavari authorities have announced a shutdown of schools and colleges on October 27 and 28. Similar orders have been given in Eluru. Additionally, schools in East Godavari, Annamayya, and Kadapa will remain shut on October 27 and 28, while schools in NTR, Bapatla, Krishna, and Guntur districts will remain closed from October 27 to 29, according to media reports. In Konaseema district, the closure of institutes will be decided by the rainfall intensity. Odisha Schools Closed Till October 30 In Gajapati district, Collector Madhumita ordered the closure of all schools, anganwadi centres, and colleges in the district until October 30, 2025. Odisha Reviews Preparedness, AP Prepares Relief Measures As per PTI reports, the Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari on Sunday reviewed the state’s preparedness in districts that are expected to be affected by the possible cyclonic system ‘Montha’ during a high-level meeting. When speaking to the press, Pujari informed that eight districts of southern Odisha — Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur — which are likely to be the most affected, have been placed under the Red Zone category. Furthermore, the administrations of all 30 districts — whether in the Red Zone or not — have been directed to remain prepared to tackle any situation in case the cyclonic system changes its course. On the other hand, the Andhra Pradesh government has prepared a roadmap for relief and essential supplies in pre-cyclone preparedness for Cyclone Montha. According to the Meteorological Department, the deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal is very likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada on the evening of October 28.
