Cy-Fair Independent School District voters elected three new moderate trustees, ending the conservative majority on the board. The election followed debates over book bans and staff reductions. “We’ve been really just wanting transparency from our school board,” said Ashley Buckner, leader of the “CFISD Parents for Librarians” group, formed after the board dismissed 50 librarians. “It’s been a big loss. It’s been really tough,” she said, according to Click2houston. Preliminary results showed Lesley Guilmart, Kendra Camarena, and Cleveland Lane Jr. winning Cy-Fair ISD board seats, defeating conservative candidates. Camarena received 49% of the vote, Guilmart won Position 5 with 51%, and Lane Jr. secured Position 6 with 45%, with conservative votes split among their opponents, as reported by Houston Chronicle. The winning candidates ran on a public education platform and received support from local Democratic lawmakers and affiliated political action committees. Rice University political science professor Mark Jones said the Cy-Fair ISD election results suggest a move toward moderation, stating, “We’re likely to see a shift back in ISD policies to where they were before 2024,” as per Click2houston. He also noted that Governor Greg Abbott’s lack of involvement may have kept him from being linked to the conservative candidates’ losses. The new trustees will take office on December 11 and serve four-year terms.
