At least 25 people were injured in clashes in Cuttack on Sunday, forcing the Odisha government to impose prohibitory orders and suspend internet services in large parts of the city. The violence, which began during an idol immersion procession in the Dargha Bazaar area late Friday night, escalated again when protesters confronted the police two days later. Authorities said restrictions would remain in place to prevent further unrest, while investigations are underway to identify those involved. Police said the orders will remain in place for 36 hours from 10 pm on Sunday, while the internet suspension will continue for 24 hours.Cuttack Violence: How it startedThe violence first began late Friday night during an idol immersion procession in the Dargha Bazaar area. Police said the clashes erupted between 1:30 am and 2 am near Haathi Pokhari after some locals objected to loud music being played during the procession.The Jhanjirimangala Bhagabat Puja Committee was leading the immersion procession at the time. Police said the situation escalated when stones and glass bottles were thrown from rooftops onto the crowd.At least six people were injured on Friday, including Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo. Vehicles, motorcycles, and roadside stalls were also damaged in the chaos.“Cuttack DCP Rishikesh Khilari, who was present at the spot to monitor security arrangements, sustained an eye injury along with other police personnel deployed on duty. The suspension applies to mobile internet, broadband, and messaging services such as WhatsApp, Facebook, X, Instagram, and Snapchat. The restrictions cover the Cuttack Municipal Corporation area, Cuttack Development Authority region, and 42 Mauza areas.Police said six people have been arrested so far. CCTV footage, drone visuals, and eyewitness accounts are being examined to identify others involved in the clashes.Cuttack BandhMeanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has called for a 12-hour bandh in Cuttack on Monday in protest over the incidents.
