COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) -A Cuban family is celebrating the grand opening of their new restaurant, Cuban Corner, in downtown Columbia — a milestone in their journey toward the American dream. The Galguera family, who came to the United States just a few years ago, began their culinary venture with a humble tent at the Soda City Market. Now, they’ve opened a permanent location at the corner of Sumter and Hampton streets. “This country opened her arms for us — especially Columbia, South Carolina — so I’m very grateful,” said Yaema Galguera, co-owner of Cuban Corner. The restaurant aims to bring the flavors and warmth of Cuban culture to the Midlands, offering traditional dishes such as Cuban sandwiches and empanadas. Inside, the aroma of sizzling food and the sound of laughter fill the air, creating a vibrant atmosphere. “My English is not the best, but our food is,” Galguera said with a smile during the grand opening. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked a significant moment for the family of five, who worked various jobs to make ends meet while pursuing their dream. “I don’t know if I can explain how I feel, but I feel very well — it’s like a dream coming true,” Galguera said. Cuban Corner is now open to the public, inviting the community to experience a taste of Cuba in the heart of Columbia. Feel more informed, prepared, and connected with WIS.
