The Jon M. Chu adaptation starring Ariane Grande and Cynthia Ervio as Glinda and Elphaba secured widespread admiration, and several Oscar nominations, when part one landed last November. Now, Wicked: For Good will tell the final part of the prequel story – with appearances from beloved literary characters Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tinman and Cowardly Lion (played by Colman Domingo). Already a hugely popular Broadway show, the movie adaptation will feature iconic songs including the titular For Good, No Good Deed and original songs like No Place Like Home and The Girl in the Bubble. Early reviews for the movie, which a select group of critics have seen, is already generating buzz over what is touted to be a well-executed ending for the Glinda the Good and the misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West. Jonathan Bailey will also return as the dashing Fiyero alongside Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum. It’s all looking up for Wicked fans as first reviews come in for part two (Picture: Giles Keyte/Universal Pictures) ‘It’s an epic and heartbreakingly tender conclusion to one of the most dynamic friendships in pop culture history. There’s a lot for fans of the Broadway show to love with butterfly kiss sized surprises in store,’ Deadline wrote. Variety described it as an ’emotional gut punch’, Cynthia as ‘maginificent’ and Ariana a ‘tour-de-force’. Vanity Fair promises ‘ jaw-dropping performances’ as ‘the film fully sticks the landing.’ Metro‘s very own film critic, Tori Brazier, wrote: ‘Wicked: For Good is the tricky second act handled with aplomb by director Jon M. Chu. Ariana Grande & Cynthia Erivo continue to own, extend and BE Glinda & Elphaba. ‘With weaker songs, the music is still mined for everything; For Good & No Good Deed are stand-outs.’ There was no shortage of praise for the two lead stars (Picture: Giles Keyte/Universal Pictures She added the acting ‘truly continues to impress’, even predicting a coveted two-time Oscar nomination for our leading ladies. ‘It’s a thrill ride and a heartbreaker and it’s sexy and everything you want it to be,’ Critic David Gordon declared. Buzzfeed declared it had ‘delivered in every way possible’, dubbing it an ‘unmissable sequel’. Audiences can expect it to be ‘deeper and more emotional’ and ’emotionally timely’. Although there were some criticism of the new movie with critic Josh Tominus called it a ‘beautiful mess of missed potential’ due to clunky clunky scripting and uneven tone. The stakes are high on and off screen (Picture: Giles Keyte/Universal Pictures) Fellow critic Juan echoed that ‘it’s not perfect, stronger direction was needed’. Fans were already left in tears simply watching the trailer for the upcoming sequel. There were plenty of emotional moments as we watch Ariana and Cynthia re-ignite the two witches’ electric chemistry on screen, soundtracked with some of the most beloved songs in musical theatre history about friendship. One moment that blew fans away was when Elphaba tells Glinda: ‘Just look at me. Not with your eyes, with theirs’. Discussing the casting of the two lead roles to Metro last year, Jon said: ‘I saw Cynthia Erivo evolve on set and find this beautiful version of Elphaba that – even though I knew all the words – had never seen it in this way.’ Adding about the God is a Woman hitmaker: ‘‘I knew that Ariana Grande was breaking ground, that people think they know her – but they’ve never seen this part. Her whole life was changing on camera.’ Wicked: For Good releases in cinemas globally on November 21, 2025. Got a story?
