Create A WFH Office That’s  Comfortable, Functional – And Webcam Ready

The COVID-19 pandemic tripled the number of people primarily working from home (from 9 million to 27.6 million), according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Fast forward to 2025, and working from home is a way of life for many people, whether on a full-time or hybrid basis.

According to Abigail Palanca, licensed real estate salesperson at SERHANT, a dedicated home office has become a must-have feature for today’s buyers, and she notes that it can significantly increase a home’s appeal and resale value. “With remote and hybrid work now the norm, buyers prioritize functional, well-designed spaces that separate work from daily life — no one wants to take Zoom calls from the kitchen island anymore,” she says.

In fact, Palanca reveals that homes with thoughtfully staged offices generate more interest and sell faster — and her team, which handles all staging in-house, always incorporates a workspace when possible. “Seeing a beautifully designed home office instantly makes you feel like you’ll be more productive, and buyers gravitate toward designated work areas, especially those with a door—because, let’s be honest, hiding a messy desk at the end of the day is a luxury.”

The 2025 U.S. Houzz & Home Study reveals that homeowners are spending approximately $1,000 to renovate their home offices. However, some are investing much more to create show-stopping spaces.

Below, I’ll share a variety of home offices created by some of the top designers, along with tips to help you create a WFH office that’s stylish enough for Zoom calls, but also comfortable and functional enough to meet your needs.

Before designing your perfect WFH office, Valerie Cardozo, founder at CARV Projects in Toronto, recommends answering the following questions:

Assess what’s working (and what’s not): “Are you drowning in paperwork or struggling with bad lighting? Identify the pain points,” Cardozo says.

Make a wish list: A spacious desk? Tons of storage? A cozy reading chair? Prioritize your must-haves.

Measure, measure, measure: Cardozo says this step saves headaches.

Decide on the vibe: Light and airy, or bold and moody? This will shape your décor choices.

Think about your backdrop: “If you’re on video calls, a styled shelf, striking art, or even a plant corner can make a great impression,” Cardozo notes.

Once you’ve answered those questions, Cardozo says you can start laying out the room with intention. She also provides three additional tips:

If space is tight, go vertical. “Floor-to-ceiling shelving or floating storage maximizes potential without taking up critical square footage,” Cardozo says.

If you’ve got room to play with, consider zones: a desk for focused work, a cozy chair for reading, and maybe even a side table for mid-day coffee breaks.

Prioritize flow – “A floating desk creates openness, while a desk against the wall maximizes usable space,” Cardozo explains.

Jill Greaves, principal at Jill Greaves Design in Toronto, Canada, shares that she tends to design an office into every home renovation and often another nook near the kitchen. She notes that a private space is important — so you can keep your work items, computer, and paperwork separate from your living space. “An office that is private allows you to close the door for quiet, and privacy – and also close the door and walk away when you need to forget about work.” In addition, Greaves explains that some separation from the rest of the house will also help with sound privacy. “Whether your calls or your family’s coming and going, sound privacy will help you work more efficiently,” she says.

WFH offices come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and interior designer Galey Alix of Galey Alix Design, tells me it boils down to square footage. “If you don’t have a spare bedroom or designated office space in your home but need to create one, if there is a strong enough will, there is always a way.”

In the project above, Alix says the couple needed separate working spaces as they are both on video and conference calls all day, but the only area available for a second desk was in their primary bedroom. “I custom-built a floating desk and hung it from the ceiling so that it blended in with their elevated aesthetic instead of combating it, while also providing an additional work space.” (Note: she fastened the back of the desk to the wall so it doesn’t swing.)

Alix selected this project to share because it’s an example of how you can indeed create a home office inside of an already established room – you just have to get creative about how you weave it into the space. “Use the same color and texture palette to help it blend in while being conscious of how much storage and desk space is needed to be functional,” she says.

When it comes to location, Vanessa DeLeon, a TV personality and interior designer based in New York City and New Jersey, tells me that even a tucked-away corner can be transformed into a chic and productive space. “The key is creating a visual and mental separation between home and office – use furniture and decor to define the area—think a statement chair, a plush rug, or meaningful artwork.”

When creating the space above, architect Andrew Franz tells me that the client requested a home office that would feel distinct from the residence. “It was designed as a freestanding room that they could share — located at the back of the house, the hidden structure is fully glazed on both sides, with views of a shade garden on one side and a small sitting area opposite.”

Franz also created a charming home office tucked onto a stair landing. “It is also located adjacent to a terrace, so one can step outside or turn their head to capture an ocean view,” he tells me. “High clerestory windows allow filtered light, while natural woods and vintage and handcrafted lighting and accessories offer an inviting experience.” Also, the home office has plenty of storage to hide files, cords, and clutter.

Customized/Multifunctional

When looking for areas where you can personalize your home, Alix says it’s easier to customize this space than most other rooms. “Personalizing your home office is also an unspoken (and underrated) celebration of your freedom from being in an impersonalized and often stale corporate office.” Even if you’re only working from home for a portion of your work week, she says you can make your home work environment more enjoyable and/or functional, so take advantage of the opportunity to customize it.

“If an extra-long desk would help your efficiency and ease of sorting paperwork, then find an extra-long desk and build the rest of the room around that.” On the other hand, if your primary objective is to feel relaxed and comfortable in your home office, Alix recommends focusing first on a comfortable desk chair and cozy rug – and consider comfort in your other selections as well.

“This is your design opportunity to be selfish; take it,” she recommends.

Alix believes the best way to create the perfect home office is to marry functionality with comfort. “For functionality, having a sizable desk and ample storage is key, and if you have enough space to add additional seating for visitors, even better, as you can now hold actual meetings in your office.”

For comfort, she encourages layering textures throughout the space to create an inviting feeling. “I often find home offices feel cold, even clinical, because former public office-goers are replicating what they’ve experienced in corporate buildings in their homes, because it’s what they know.” However, when working from home, Alix says you have the opportunity to create a space that allows you to be both productive and comfortable.

Margaret Donaldson, Charleston-based interior designer and founder of MDI Luxury Design, designed the WFH space above to be an office and also a comfortable sitting area.

“We designed the built-in desk so it had a smaller footprint than some home offices, but it is also integrated into its own nook for an ultimate efficient work space,” she explains. The large window brings in both natural light and a great view during those long work days. “This space was also designed to feel more masculine, including more depth in fabrics and textures.” And Donaldson says automatic grass shades are applied on the floor-to-ceiling windows to adjust the light in the room when needed throughout the day.

Donaldson firmly believes that a WFH office space should be personal, functional, and exactly what you need. If you need more storage and organization, she recommends starting there when you begin designing. “If you need more surface space and a large monitor, perhaps the desk space is where your focus should be.” Donaldson warns against skimping on comfort and durability since you’ll spend a lot of time in this space. “We love adding additional non-desk seating where you might be able to pop your feet up for a break, curl up with your laptop, or even just take a phone call,” she says, adding, “It provides respite from your desk if /when you have the opportunity throughout the day.”

Sometimes, more than one person needs to work from home. Donaldson designed the space above for a power duo and tells me it needed to be spacious and functional. “The neutral color is offset by pops of orange that complement the surrounding rooms.” And she says the T-shape was utilized so that communal work could be done in the middle but also to allow space to spread out. “The big windows have a shade that can be brought down to combat the natural light in the afternoon, and a ceiling fan was a must to keep things cool when the ideas are flowing.” The homeowners also requested storage and extra countertops surrounding the desks to add function and versatility to the space.

Vacation Home Office

Even a vacation home needs a WFH space if you plan on staying there for any amount of time. In the project above, Donaldson says the office is compact, but it packs all the things you want or need into a working space. “We kept light filtering curtains on the tall windows to keep things light and bright, but easy to pull back to expose the nature view.” She notes that a grass cloth wallpaper was the perfect choice to add texture and elevate the space. “Framed memorabilia were a fun addition to this neutral workspace and make it feel more personal.”

The Desk Setup

The desk setup can actually make or break your WFH office. Cardozo says flexibility is a common oversight. “A height-adjustable desk or a monitor stand lets you switch between sitting and standing, which keeps energy levels up and reduces fatigue.” She says it’s important to prioritize wellness, and that starts with a right setup.

According to interior designer Kathy Kuo of Kathy Kuo Home , the desk you choose should support the way you like to work. “I need enough space to spread out material samples when I’m working on design projects, so a desk with plenty of surface area is a must for me,” she shares. If space is an issue, Kuo recommends going with a petite writing desk or a wall desk with shelves above it for extra storage.

Blair Britt, co-owner at Bella B Home Designs in Huntingdon Valley, offers the following tips regarding the WFH office desk:

Never place your back to the opening of the main door, you want to be able to see a person walking in – plus its good feng shui.

This means – floating your desk and yes there are tons of ways to hide wires.

A floating desk allows you to fill the room, let good energy flow around, and you’re also not staring directly at a wall.

When choosing colors, DeLeon recommends starting with a palette that evokes calm and focus. “Soft neutrals, warm whites, and subtle greige tones create a serene backdrop that promotes clarity and productivity,” she explains.

BettyAnn Kraft, co-owner at Bella B Home Designs, tells me she tends to use soothing colors in a home office. “Light and bright mixed with wallpaper tends to make a space feel more inviting and calming since work can be very stressful,” she says.

Greaves also recommends neutrals. “The colors of your room will help convey the message that you are in an office environment at home, so using neutrals, no bright colors and keeping your backdrop professional are also important.” She warns that bright colors will reflect on your skin tone on video calls. “Wood tones are warm and convey quality and richness, while whites will look contemporary and fresh.” (Also, learn which paint colors to avoid when selling your home.)

Lighting is another important consideration. “Good natural light is fuel for a good mood in a work-from-home space, but it is equally as important to consider the window coverings and how they filter the light throughout the day,” Donaldson explains.

In fact, DeLeon recommends positioning your desk near natural light to reduce eye strain and boost mood. “Supplement with layered lighting: a stylish overhead fixture for general illumination and a task lamp with adjustable brightness for focused work,” she says. For clients frequently on video calls, DeLeon recommends a flattering, diffused light source placed behind or around the screen.

Greaves says you need a desktop light source so you can light your face for video calls, and light your desktop to view papers. “Any glare on your screen is not only annoying, but can tire your eyes, and overhead lighting can produce unflattering shadows on your face for video calls and cast shadows on your desktop or keyboard.” She recommends a non-reflective desk, which will also help to eliminate glare – and says you should avoid glass tops and glossy finishes. “If you must have a glass desk, use a large desk pad to minimize glare and hot-spots for your eyes.”

Also, Greaves recommends placing the desk in front of the window, as the light from the window will light up your face on video and there’ll be less contrast between the screen and the bright window. “However, it is always necessary to use a sheer curtain or window blind to soften the light coming in; this is helpful to your eyes and enhances the quality of your workspace so you are not staring at a wall.” She says you can look to your screen and out the window to give your eyes a helpful break.

Don’t forget about storage in your WFH office. DeLeon says you can use sleek, functional pieces to help maintain an organized environment. “One of our favorite ways to elevate these spaces is through custom millwork—built-in desks, shelving, or wall paneling that maximizes storage while adding architectural interest and a sense of permanence,” she says.

Christine Markatos Lowe, a Santa Monica-based interior designer and founder of Christine Markatos Design, tells me that storage is key to hiding the clutter of the workplace. “Whether in a desk or a series of built-ins, storage can also be customized to obscure a printer or a television.”

Bringing It All Together

In the project above, Leah Bailey, principal designer and founder of Savannah-based Leah Bailey Interiors, tells me the home office was designed to strike a balance between function and beauty. “We used layered lighting, from natural light to sconces and a statement lantern, to keep the space bright and energizing throughout the day.” She explains that the built-in cabinetry offers hidden storage and open shelving for curated pieces that reflect the homeowner’s personality. “A soft, neutral palette keeps the room calm and cohesive, while textures like linen, worn wood, and hide, add depth and warmth.” Bailey says every detail was chosen to make working from home feel intentional, comfortable, and inspiring.”

Decorative Elements

If you’re a book lover, Cardozo recommends showcasing your collection on open shelves—those colorful spines add instant texture. “With storage, you can find vintage bookshelves or credenzas that tell a story, and incorporate unique pieces that not only provide function, but bring visual interest,” she says.

Drapery and Rugs

Drapery, rugs, and other textiles will bring softness to the space. “A low pile rug will ensure that your office chair can move easily (if on casters),” Cardozo explains. Also, she says all textiles will also dampen sound, and allow your space to feel quieter, while bringing visual texture and depth in your space.

Video-Worthy Backdrop

“Styled shelves, framed artwork, or a corner filled with plants can make your video call setup feel polished and professional,” Cardozo says. She’s worked with clients who wanted their backdrop to double as a conversation starter, and says, “Trust me, it pays off.”

Mood-Boosting Details

Adding plants, a pinboard for your goals and ideas, or even a statement rug are all items that Cardozo says can elevate the space and keep you feeling inspired. “Those additional details and decor accent pieces will always go a long way.”

Cardozo sums up her comments in two words: comfort and personality. “Many home offices lack a truly ergonomic chair: a must-have for anyone spending hours at their desk.” In addition, she finds that many WFH offices feel quite functional and miss the charm that makes you want to actually spend time there. “A moody paint color, a cozy throw, or an inspiring piece of art can transform your office,” she says.

Kuo agrees that adding decorative accents can infuse personality and make the office a space she actually wants to spend time in. “Think soft textiles like a rug and throw blanket (perfect for chilly days), playful artwork, and accessories like candles, sculptural objects, and coffee table books.” She adds that no home is complete without a table lamp or two, adding, “Bonus points if they include dimmers so you can get the ambiance just right.”

Perigold’s Design Service’s designer, Elisabeth Gunshenan, recommends adding live plants and florals to home offices as they’ve been linked to reduced stress levels and increased productivity. “Aside from all of the emotional and mental benefits of houseplants, they are also a great way to bring additional colors and textures into your office space,” Gunshenan adds.

Another one of her tips is to add task lighting to reduce eye strain and lessen the chances of a headache. “There are now so many stylish, cordless options, so you don’t have to worry about being in close proximity to an outlet.”

Gunshenan also recommends wallpaper, which can act as a stylish backdrop for Zoom/Skype meeting. “Whether it is a textured neutral or a bold, colorful print, wallpaper allows you to bring your personality into your office space,” she says.

For a tablet that feels like reading and writing on paper, the Boox Note Max is an ePaper notebook that lets you create, organize, and edit your ideas. The ultra slim Note Max has a 13.3” Ink Carta 1300 screen. The 3200 x 2400 (300 ppi) resolution is free from front light, which makes it easy to read. Various document formats ranging from PDF to DOCX can be opened and read, and AI-driven editing tools make it easy to edit notes and also link notes, files, and websites.

The adjustable dual-tone front lights let you customize the most desirable view for the environment. Third-party apps, eBook formats, and note-taking tools increase functionality when working or having fun.

You can also get a paper feel with the TCL NXTPAPER 11+ Tablet, which uses both reduced glare and eye-care blue light technology – but maintains original colors. It can easily switch between display modes, and the 8000mAh battery provides enough power to stream all day. The quad speakers provide dynamic audio and the dual microphones cancel noise for clear calls. In addition, the 8MP camera takes clear, realistic images.

The accompanying TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER 5G phone continues the paper feel, and provides glare-free, blue light filtering. It has a 6.78 inch FHD+ display, a 120Hz refresh rate. The camera system includes the 32MP front camera, a 50MP primary hybrid lens (with macro mode), 5MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and 2MP depth lens. Face unlock, and fingerprint biometric security on the side help to keep the camera secure.

If you need desktop essentials, the JLab Epic Work Bundle includes a backlit mechanical keyboard (great for low-light environments). The keyboard is also wireless, and a single charge lasts for over a year. The ergonomic mouse is wireless as well, and has adjustable tracking and silent buttons. Although it’s good to stand periodically when you’re working, you may get tired.
