A security guard working at a Carrs grocery store in Anchorage, Alaska, was allegedly shot Sunday morning after asking a customer to show his receipt.
Police said Kendrick McFarland, who had been checking receipts since early morning, approached a man around 8:30 a.m. when the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire, according to Alaska’s News Source. McFarland described the shooting as a “crazy turn of events,” telling the outlet he did not know the man who opened fire. “Don’t know the gentleman. The gentleman [doesn’t] know me. I don’t guess. We don’t know each other, and it was just a crazy turn of events,” McFarland said.
He explained he had only been working the job for three weeks when the grocery store’s new security policy requiring receipt checks led to the dispute.
McFarland was shot in the abdomen but survived. He told Alaska’s News Source he tried to grab the gun before blacking out, and the next thing he remembered was waking up in an ambulance. He spent a week in the hospital and is still recovering.
Anchorage police detained a suspect at the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
After the shooting, McFarland said he has no plans to stay in the industry.
“I think I’m for sure retired from security. I don’t think that’s something I want to look into anymore,” he said.
In July, 23-year-old Leroy Manogiamanu was shot and killed outside the Gaslight Lounge in downtown Anchorage, the outlet separately reported. Three others were wounded in the incident, which police are investigating as a homicide.
The Anchorage Police Department did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller’s request for comment.
