Many people were down on the Dallas Cowboys’ chances of being competitive this season after the team traded superstar edge rusher Micah Parsons just prior to Week 1. But three games in, the reality of how much of a challenge the 2025 NFL season will be for Dallas is sinking in.
Dallas has a 1-2 record, and its lone win came by three points in overtime in Week 2 against the New York Giants, a team that has even more problems. With the Green Bay Packers getting ready to visit AT&T Stadium this Sunday, the team needs to find something that will work, especially on the defensive side of the football.
Owner Jerry Jones made it clear publicly that he is happy with head coach Brian Schottenheimer, as well as Schottenheimer’s staff.
“I really like our coaching staff,” Jones said, per Athlon Sports. “They’re really outstanding teachers. They know what they’re doing. It doesn’t look that way now. Chicago had something to do with that. But I’ve got real confidence in this staff that we’ve got.”

Jones disappointed many Cowboys fans when he hired Schottenheimer prior to this season. Some were hoping he would hire Bill Belichick, the legendary ex-New England Patriots coach and six-time Super Bowl champion, but Belichick instead became the head coach of the University of North Carolina.
Schottenheimer, the son of former longtime NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, had been the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator for two years prior to getting promoted to head coach.
Whether the younger Schottenheimer is to blame or not, the Cowboys definitely have a lot of problems right now, starting with their defense.
They rank at or near the bottom of the NFL in several key defensive metrics, and in their embarrassing 31-14 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday, they allowed struggling second-year quarterback Caleb Williams to complete 19 of 28 passing attempts and throw four touchdown passes without an interception.
Per NFL.com, they have a total of just four sacks through three games, which is 28th in the league, and it’s a stat indicative of how much they’re missing Parsons.

Dallas has an additional problem in the form of the ankle injury star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb suffered on Sunday. While he’s expected to miss Week 4, he said he “absolutely” feels like he can play versus Green Bay.
