NFL legend Tom Brady is making headlines as a broadcaster because of his recent appearance on the Las Vegas Raiders’ coaching booth on the latest Monday Night Football. Him sitting there during a game fueled concerns about his involvement with the Raiders’ football operations as a minority owner. Since he has a broadcaster role with FOX, people believe him getting information in production meetings with the TV network is a conflict of interest. The NFL has since clarified that owners are allowed to sit in the coaching booth and noted “Tom continues to be prohibited from going to a team facility for practices or production meetings.” The quarterback is allowed to attend production meetings remotely. Despite the league’s stance, however, controversy continues and we’re hearing many NFL personalities weigh in on the topic. On Wednesday’s press conference, Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer was asked about it as the Raiders are on the team’s schedule (Week 11) and Brady will be on the call for Week 3’s matchup versus the Chicago Bears—meaning he’ll talk to Schottenheimer in preparation for the weekend. The Cowboys coach offered a strong and reasonable opinion.
Schottenheimer has the perfect stance on Tom Brady drama
“I’m not even going to talk to Tom,” Schottenheimer joked before getting serious. “Everybody has everybody’s playbook, everybody knows somebody that knows somebody that’s been some place. I don’t have a problem with it. Some people might but look, I’ll talk football with anybody. I love the game.”Schottenheimer’s stance makes perfect sense to me. Sure, the Brady headlines will always sell and the conflict of interest concerns are understandable. But NFL teams have large staffs breaking down every minute detail of opponent’s films day in and day out. Heck, it’s a process that starts weeks in advance to games and sometimes even in the offseason. I’m not sure how one or two comments to a color commentator would reveal enough to be a factor.
Schottenheimer has a lot on his plate. But Brady being on the call for Sunday’s matchup is not one of them.”What Tom does with his ownership position is up to Tom but in terms of me being concerned about something I might say to Tom getting back to (Raiders head coach Pete Carroll), I think Pete and I know each other very well,” Schottenheimer added.
