A young couple visiting a shopping centre in Malaysia reportedly became the centre of controversy after they locked themselves inside a public toilet cubicle for 40 minutes. The incident, which took place in the café section of a well-known mall, has since gone viral on social media, prompting widespread criticism from the public.
Suspicious Behaviour And Mall Security Intervention
According to reports, the couple, believed to be students, entered the mall for a casual outing. However, overcome by passion, they made their way directly to a public restroom, where they locked themselves in a stall.
As time passed, other visitors waiting to use the facilities grew suspicious. After 40 minutes with no sign of movement, one bystander looked under the door and noticed four legs, belonging to a male and a female.
Concerned, the onlookers alerted mall security. Security officers arrived shortly thereafter and attempted to knock on the cubicle door, but received no response. The door was subsequently forced open. Upon discovering the couple inside, the guards reportedly reprimanded them and struck them lightly with sticks as a form of disciplinary action. The embarrassed couple fled the scene.
Viral Video And Public Reaction
A bystander captured the entire episode on video, which has since been uploaded to Instagram and widely shared across various platforms. In response, the café posted a public service announcement stating: “To the couple who spent 40 minutes in the restroom, we know who you are. Please don’t do it again.”
The footage has sparked a strong reaction online. Many social media users criticised the couple’s behaviour, calling it inappropriate and immature.
One commenter wrote, “Young people these days have lost all sense of decency, 40 minutes in a public toilet is outrageous.” Another added, “Next time, try using the downstairs bathroom, it’s more private.”
Broader Implications And Future Measures
The incident has reignited debate in Malaysia around public displays of affection (PDA) and the lack of sex education among youths. Experts have pointed out that inadequate awareness around privacy and sexual health is a growing concern.
The Malaysian Family Council has also issued a statement warning that teenage pregnancy rates are expected to rise by 15% by 2025.
In response to the controversy, mall authorities have pledged to increase security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
