Sebastian Cossa on Saturday returned to the site of his lone NHL appearance. This time, he didn’t fare as well.
The Buffalo Sabres scored four times on 20 shots against Cossa and defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 in a preseason game at KeyBank Center.
The Red Wings (2-2-0) want to get a good look at Cossa before assigning him to the Grand Rapids Griffins before the regular season. He’s played two full exhibition games out of four, the only Detroit goalie to get a complete game, and he faced most of Buffalo’s regular lineup.
Patrick Kane and Marco Kasper scored for the Red Wings. Alex DeBrincat assisted on both goals.
Tage Thompson scored twice for Buffalo. He fired in a shot off a face-off 14 seconds into the second period. He blasted in a shot on the power play 37 seconds into the third period while a scrambling Cossa was trying to get back into position.
The Sabres jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Rasmus Dahlin fired in a one-timer from the point past a screened Cossa at 3:41. Radim Mrtka beat Cossa five-hole off the rush at 12:17.
Former Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon stopped 26-of-28 shots while playing the entire game. Lyon signed a two-year deal with Buffalo on July 1 after two seasons in Detroit.
DeBrincat won a puck battle behind the net to set up Kane’s goal at 18:27 of the first period. Kasper corralled the rebound of Ben Chiarot’s shot and fired the puck in from a sharp angle at 13:36 of the third.
Josh Norris capped the scoring with an empty-net goal.
Cossa relived Ville Husso after the first period on Dec. 9 and earned a 6-5 shootout victory at Buffalo in his lone NHL regular season game.
The Red Wings host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday (7 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network).
