Corporator’s cleanliness drive transforms Nellore

Nellore 14 Division Corporator Kartham Prathap Reddy’s “One Day One Street Cleanliness” drive, inspired by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s “Swachh Andhra – Swarna Andhra” programme, has helped transform areas such as A.C. Nagar, Padmavathi Nagar, Balaji Nagar and Srinagar over the past few weeks.

In an exclusive interaction with The Hindu on Saturday (September 27, 2025), he said, “This programme was launched on August 18, 2025, with an aim to keep our division clean and green. Out of 80 streets in the division, we have already sanitised 30 streets, and are working four days a week. Along with the municipal staff, I hired three private workers who clean the streets daily between 5.30 a.m. and 10.30 a.m.”

The Corporator said that he is using his own funds to ensure that workers are dropping oil balls into the canals, bleaching, fogging, spraying mosquito repellents, and removing silt and soil from the canals, in accordance with the instructions of the Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Ponguru Narayana.

He is also raising awareness on cleanliness for the better good of public safety and health. “I will always remain in public service to serve the people of Division 14, who made me win with a majority of 1,918 votes during the last election. Earlier, I had planted Tulsi saplings at unauthorised dumping sites to discourage people from littering. This move was appreciated by former municipal commissioner Surya Teja, who directed officials to do the same in all divisions.”

He further said, “It is the responsibility of every citizen to keep the environment clean, prevent water stagnation at open places and to ensure that there are no plastic containers, old tyres, or discarded coconut shells on rooftops or open areas.”
