Coronation Street star says being a mum made 'crushing' baby plot 'difficult' to film

There's heartbreaking news ahead on Coronation Street , with one character's "really sad" discovery leaving them concerned for their unborn child's safety. Shona Platt will be dealt the devastating news next week that her unborn baby has a mass on their neck, as revealed in a scan. As she and partner David Platt reel from the news, they soon get an upsetting diagnosis. She's told the baby has a tumour and it may be cancerous, with a consultant informing her that should she go ahead with the pregnancy , she would need to undergo risky surgery. Shona learns that the procedure carries health risks for her and her baby, but she's determined to go ahead. It sparks drama with a concerned David, who asks his wife to consider the pros and cons of terminating the pregnancy or having the operation. The scenes were "difficult" for Shona actress Julia Goulding to film, being a mother herself. The star shared that having experienced the joys of baby scans, it was "really sad" to film her character not getting that same experience. She explained: "It’s crushing. Absolutely crushing. It would be for anyone. "They were really difficult scenes to do. Because I’ve got children of my own and I’ve had scans, I know how excited you feel before them, and then for them to come out and not to be able to celebrate and have joy with something so joyful, is really, really sad." When Shona finds out that the mass is a tumour and will need treatment, Julia revealed her character immediately decides not to terminate the pregnancy. Julia said: "Termination isn’t an option for her. "She’s just like, ‘Yep, surgery, we’re doing it.’ And I think that’s where a lot of the conflict comes in, because it’s a particular type of operation and it’s incredibly rare, and there is a risk to mother’s life and baby’s life. "And that’s where David’s arguments come in, to at least think about the pros and cons of having a termination or having the surgery." Viewers will see Shona struggling prior to the scan and the worrying news about her child, as partner David goes AWOL, and Shona will be unclear over his feelings about everything. Julia said: "She’s thinking that he’s not that bothered. He’s thinking that he’s doing a really good job of seeming okay with it. And I think the whole point of the special episode is to show how isolated they both feel, and how much stronger they are when they’re together and on the same track, as it were. "She just feels very alone, lost, scared, all the things that you would do, and it hasn’t helped with him not turning up to the first scan and being late for the second one, so she’s not feeling as confident in his support, whereas he’s feeling really lousy about probably knowing that’s how she’s feeling but not really being able to express it because it’s David Platt." Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITV X. * Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok , Snapchat , Instagram , Twitter , Facebook , YouTube and Threads .
