Coronation Street sparks exit fears as fan-favourite suffers nasty fall

It appears an unforeseen departure might be on the horizon in Coronation Street.

This follows some viewers realising they’ve seen a new face on the cobbles in another soap before.

During Monday’s episode of the ITV programme, audiences witnessed several Weatherfield locals participating in the speed dating evening at The Rovers.

Nevertheless, Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger) discloses she’s planning to manipulate the event so that Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews) can have her first date with George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley).

Yet before the romantic encounters can properly commence, Jenny’s mobile keeps buzzing, displaying Rita Tanner’s (Barbara Knox) name on the display.

Despite declining it several times, Jenny eventually chooses to pick up, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Hurrying towards the gathering, Jenny explains she must dash off as Rita has taken a tumble. At the corner shop, Rita appeared fine as she chatted with Jenny, who admitted her existence wasn’t what she had envisioned.

Rita told her: “You know Jenny, I’ll always look after you.”

Whilst Jenny responded: “Yeah but I should be the one looking after you!”

As she reassured Jenny they could care for each other, they went upstairs for a brew, although it appeared her accident was more severe than she had originally believed.

Later in the instalment, Jenny was spotted weeping before George approached with some flowers for Rita. Inquiring about the situation, she explained: “We’re not long back from the hospital. She thought that she had just hurt her ankle. She wasn’t expecting a scan or for the results to be so bad.”

Initially, George was curious about what the scan revealed before deciding it was Rita’s business to disclose.

He shared with Jenny his hope that it wasn’t as severe as someone he once knew, who went into A&E with a broken leg and discovered he had stage four bowel cancer.

She responded: “No, it’s not as bad as that.”

He added: “It must be pretty bad, I can see you’ve been crying. I know how much you love her. It must be hitting you pretty hard.”

Although it’s still unclear what’s wrong with Rita, could an unexpected departure be looming after her lengthy stint on the cobbles?

Coronation Street is available to watch on ITVX.
