Coronation Street fans think they have worked out the real reason for a recent change to Betsy Swain’s character, and it seemingly seals Becky Swain’s return plan. Those who follow the ITV soap were recently confused to discover that the character, played by Sydney Martin, was celebrating her 18th birthday, after making her first appearance in Weatherfield as a 16-year-old last summer. Back in June, Sydney addressed her real age and soap age, as she posted two pictures side by side, one of her at the British Soap Awards and another from a photoshoot as her Weatherfield alter-ego. At the time, Sydney admitted: “Last two posts really highlighting the 15-23 playing age [crying laughing emoji].” She added: “Thank you for the baby face, mum.” But this month, Betsy was seen celebrating her 18th birthday after the show seemingly upped the teenager’s age without explanation. At the time, Betsy’s mum, Lisa Swain was heard planning a gift for Betsy, telling then-girlfriend Carla Connor she’d had an idea of getting them matching rings featuring the fingerprint of Lisa’s late partner and Betsy’s other mum, Becky. As Betsy’s celebrations rolled around last week, her big day was quickly overshadowed as she not only witnessed a shocking hit and run, which has landed Tyrone Dobbs in hospital with serious injuries, she was completely unaware that Becky had made a shock return from the dead. As fans know, Becky left Lisa shocked when she recently revealed she is very much alive by unexpectedly showing up in the living room of No.6 Coronation Street, her new home with her new fiancee, Carla. Lisa struggled to believe Becky was standing in front of her, and was unable to get her head around the fact that Becky had allowed her and their daughter, Betsy, to grieve her for so long despite her whole death being fake. Becky explained that she had spent the last four years in Spain under another name after being put into witness protection, following an undercover operation gone wrong. Lisa was furious to discover that Becky had been targeting a dangerous gang, which had ultimately put the whole family in danger and led to the decision for Becky to go into hiding. Since then, Lisa has clearly been battling with her feelings, while also trying to get to the truth of what really happened. She confronted her boss, DI Costello, but he confirmed Becky’s version of events. Carla has been trying her best to support her partner, particularly as Becky keeps showing up in their home, but while Lisa didn’t want Betsy to know about Becky’s return from the dead, she found out anyway. With a clear instruction to stay away, Becky watched Betsy from a distance as she made her way to the precinct with her headphones on. When Ryan Connor, ran over to Betsy with his hood up, Becky misread the situation and jumped in to protect her daughter. But as the week has gone on, Corrie fans aren’t convinced that Becky’s motives are genuine, and think her return is linked to Betsy’s recent milestone. @sadpphicss said: “I think there’s a reason they changed Betsy’s age to 18 AFTER they decided to bring Becky back and I think it has something to do with money…” @missmollybruton replied: “I completely agree!!! Aging up Betsy means she can access the money Becky left her without Lisa’s knowledge. That also lines up with the pub sale that’s going to happen soon which means Betsy gets the money back that she lent Carla and Becky keeps mentioning Betsy being 18.” @Chip14Kc commented: “I wonder if Becky came back for the money she left for Betsy #swarla.” @Dianaspuzzles shared: “This is such a good theory….why age Betsy up a year, why keep mentioning her 18th & Becky is clearly still a danger so why risk her ‘family’ safety right now……it’s all about the money not the family…..imagine her face when she finds out Betsy leant it to Carla!” @swoosh286 added: “;Becky is terrible with money’. What if Curtis was paying Becky to stay dead, it was mutually beneficial! With his death he’s no longer her cash cow & needs another support system! Betsy turns 18 & bingo – instant solution! It’s ALL about the [money] #swarla.”
