Coronation Street is preparing to axe a cobbles icon according to the boss, and viewers are convinced they’ve worked out exactly who it will be.
The enduring drama has never shied away from delivering devastating deaths. Since launching back in 1960, numerous Weatherfield locals have breathed their last on those legendary cobbles.
Yet recently, boss Iain MacLeod disclosed that a cherished resident will meet their demise in the new year, forming part of the groundbreaking crossover with rival soap Emmerdale in early 2026.
Discussing the ITV programme’s upcoming 65th milestone in December, executive producer Iain revealed to Daily Star: “The soap gods demand a sacrifice when you have an event of this kind.”
He continued: “Sometimes the biggest and best exits for characters that you care the most about. It’s going to be shocking. There will be lots of trauma, drama and twists.”, reports the Daily Star.
After Iain’s explosive revelation, viewers instantly began speculating about the doomed character. Some believe it might be Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) following reports in May suggesting his decade-long stint would end in tragedy.
Nevertheless, other supporters are adamant that the character facing death is another soap stalwart: David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd).
On a Corrie Facebook fan group, responding to producer Iain’s revelation about a legend being killed off, one viewer commented: “I’m thinking David.”
Another responded: “To be honest they said it would be shocking and that would be wouldn’t it? I don’t think anyone would expect it.”
A third concurred: “I thought that too or maybe Audrey?” The announcement of the Coronation Street and Emmerdale crossover was revealed earlier this year. For the first time in British soap history, an hour-long special will witness characters from both programmes unite in a celebration of the genre.
The crossover special with Emmerdale is anticipated to deliver massive viewing figures. An ITV spokesperson revealed: “The distinctive worlds of Emmerdale and Coronation Street will merge for one night only in a ‘mash-up’ of our two favourite communities.
“The producers, scriptwriters and production teams have conceived an ingenious way of linking the two universes, but with characters then returning to the soaps they are renowned for inhabiting in Manchester and Yorkshire.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
