Coronation Street's Shona Platt star makes 'difficult' admission amid character's 'sweet' baby news bombshell

Coronation Street star Julia Goulding has admitted upcoming scenes were 'difficult' to film as her character's 'sweet' baby news is set to be rocked by a health bombshell. Those who follow the ITV soap saw Shona Platt recently reveal to husband David that she is expecting their first child together after he found a pregnancy test. David has already been seen missing one scan, which Shona ended up cancelling, after he got stuck in a lift and in upcoming scenes, he looks set to let down his wife again. According to new spoilers, DC Kit Green accosts David in the precinct and accuses him of winding up Sarah with his jibes about their relationship. David’s unrepentant and shoves past him, so a seething Kit arrests him for assaulting a police officer. When David fails to show up to take her for her scan, a fuming Shona asks Sarah for a lift. Meanwhile, David pleads with Kit to let him go as he couldn’t bear to let Shona down. Kit relents and drives David to the hospital and eventually, David and Shona gaze at their baby on the monitor. "Kit drives David there, and then they’re able to go in together, and they’re really excited," Julia explained. "It’s not often that you get married couples that have been together for a while having a child on Coronation Street, it’s usually a product of an affair or something, so it’s actually really sweet that Shona and David are having a baby, I think." But the sonographer’s face clouds as they point out a mass on the baby's neck. Speaking about the couple's response to the news, Julia shared: "It’s crushing. Absolutely crushing. It would be for anyone." She then added how she found filming the scenes: "They were really difficult scenes to do. Because I’ve got children of my own and I’ve had scans, I know how excited you feel before them, and then for them to come out and not to be able to celebrate and have joy with something so joyful, is really, really sad." It is then that a unique heart-wrenching episode will air, in which the first half hour follows both Shona and David’s journey as they prepare to set off to see the consultant to find out more about the mass found on their unborn baby's neck. Viewers will first see the morning from Shona’s point of view as an emotional Shona wonders how David can be so casual when their baby’s life could be at risk. Eventually ordering David out of the car, insisting she doesn’t want him at the hospital. Those watching then see the same timeline, but from David’s point of view as he focusses on preparing himself and his determination to be strong for Shona, despite breaking inside. We will then be moved back to the present time, as the consultant confirms the presence of a tumour on the baby’s neck, and explains that if they decide to continue with the pregnancy, Shona will have to undergo complex surgery. As the consultant reveals that their daughter’s tumour could be cancerous, how will a shell-shocked Shona and David respond?
