COP30: World leaders vow to walk down low-carbon progress path

Belém, Brazil: Leaders from more than a hundred countries reaffirmed their commitment to addressing climate change and implementing effective policies at the Leaders Climate Summit. The summit in the northeastern Brazilian city of Belém served as a precursor to COP30, the annual climate change conference hosted by the United Nations that begins Monday. Several initiatives were launched at the meeting on November 6 and 7 focusing on forests, energy access, biofuels, and the expansion of renewable energy. On Thursday, UN Secretary General Antonio Gutiérres criticised the global community for failing to ramp up action to restrict global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. “Science now tells us that a temporary overshoot [beyond] the 1.5 limit — starting at the latest in the early 2030s — is inevitable,” Gutiérres said. “Too many corporations are making record profits from climate devastation, with billions spent on lobbying, deceiving the public and obstructing progress. Too many leaders remain captive to these entrenched interests.” The UN chief told the leaders they have a choice: "We can choose to lead or be led to ruin."Live Events For their part, leaders sought to reassure that despite global headwinds and domestic challenges, they remained committed to transitioning to a low-carbon development path. Among the initiatives launched was the Brazil-led Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF), a financial mechanism that will incentivise the conservation of standing tropical forests. Another initiative, the Belém Declaration on Hunger, Poverty and Human-Centered Climate Action, was endorsed by 44 countries. It outlines measures to address hunger and poverty through climate solutions. Focus on Sustainable Fuels The declaration commits to expanding climate-responsive social protection systems, investing in resilient food production, and empowering small farmers and local communities to manage climate risks. The Belém 4X Pledge on Sustainable Fuels, endorsed by 19 countries including India, aims to provide political support and promote international cooperation to at least quadruple the use of sustainable fuels by 2035. As climate change leads to more extreme weather events, it is becoming increasingly important to strengthen efforts for adaptation and build resilience. Leaders signalled the need to focus on investing in adaptation, reaffirming the urgency and the benefits that accrue from protecting livelihoods, infrastructure, and food systems. Several leaders agreed that adaptation strengthens fiscal stability and accelerates sustainable development. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said, “Adaptation cannot remain the silent partner of mitigation. The two are inseparable. They are twin pillars of climate justice. At COP30, our collective task is to elevate adaptation to the same level of political and financial ambition as mitigation.” All leaders participating in the roundtable spoke of strengthening international cooperation to accelerate the implementation of National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and reaching concrete outcomes at COP30 to implement the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA).Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
