Contract awarded for AC Atlantic Avenue improvements

ATLANTIC CITY — City Council last week awarded a contract to South State Inc. of Bridgeton to pave Atlantic Avenue as part of a multimillion-dollar improvement project, the city said.
The project will include paving from Tennessee to Albany avenues, traffic light synchronization, surveillance cameras and upgraded pedestrian facilities such as high-visibility crosswalks, improved lighting and ADA-compliant ramps, the city said Tuesday in a news release.
City officials said at a news conference last month that the project was expected to cost $17.3 million. Of that total, $10.3 million is coming from the federal government, while the other $7 million was provided by eight grants the resort acquired, Jim Rutala, the city’s grant consultant, said at the time.
U.S. Rep Jeff Van Drew, R-2nd, said funding for the project was authorized by the Transportation and Infrastructure Bill in 2021. However, the Trump administration held up the grants.
“Paving Atlantic Avenue is something taxpayers have wanted and needed, and the Small Administration was committed to getting it done,” Mayor Marty Small Sr. said in a statement. “This project wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of key partners like Governor Murphy’s former Chief of Staff Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, who helped negotiate the resolution of the casino litigation; Congressman Jeff Van Drew, who worked with the Federal Highway Administration to release the grant agreement; and NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor and his dedicated staff, who made this project a priority.”
In addition to the transportation improvements, the project will feature streetscape and beautification enhancements, including more than 200 decorative streetlights, shade trees and improved signage, the city said.
