Contraband with 'institutional value' over $188K seized at Joyceville Institution

Earlier this week, a package containing contraband and unauthorized items was seized at Joyceville Institution, according to a release from the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). On Monday, Oct. 27, 2025, the package was seized “as a result of the vigilance of staff members,” the CSC detailed, noting the package was the result of a suspected drone drop. The items seized included tobacco and cannabis, as well as two cell phones, according to a release from the federal agency. The CSC stated that the estimated institutional value of the items seized (what the seized items would be worth if sold to those inside the correctional system) is $188,500. This was the sixth seizure of contraband and unauthorized items at the multi-level institution this year. The previous occurrence was reported after a lockdown in July, which resulted in the seizure of edged weapons. An “edged weapon” refers to a bladed instrument, such as a knife or an axe. According to the release, the CSC has heightened measures to prevent contraband and unauthorized items from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. The CSC added that the agency works “in partnership with police to take action against those who attempt to introduce” such items at federal prisons. “CSC has set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions so that it may receive additional information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions. These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members working at CSC institutions,” the organization stated. “The toll-free number, 1-866-780-3784, helps ensure that the information shared is protected and that callers remain anonymous.”
