Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has landed in legal trouble over one of his recent brand endorsements. The Kota District Consumer Court has issued a notice to the actor following a complaint that alleges misleading claims in an advertisement for an elaichi and pan masala brand he endorses. The complaint was filed by Inder Mohan Singh Honey, a BJP leader and Rajasthan High Court advocate, who argued that the product’s marketing claims are deceptive and could potentially influence young consumers negatively. Saffron claim questioned for being “unrealistic” According to the petition, the brand’s advertisement promotes its elaichi and pan masala products as being “saffron-infused”, even though they are priced at just ₹5 per pack. The complainant pointed out that saffron costs nearly ₹4 lakh per kilogram, making such a claim “factually impossible.” Honey stated, “This is not just misleading but also an unethical way of promoting products that can harm public health. The advertisement falsely implies quality and luxury, which cannot be justified at that price point.” Petitioner raises public health concerns The BJP leader also highlighted the health hazards associated with pan masala consumption and criticised celebrities for promoting such products. “Salman Khan is a role model for millions. Celebrities in other countries avoid endorsing even aerated drinks, while our stars promote tobacco and pan masala. These endorsements send the wrong message to the youth,” he said in his statement to ANI. He further added that pan masala and similar products are among the leading causes of mouth cancer in India, and celebrity-backed advertisements only normalise their use. Court issues notice to Salman Khan and manufacturer Following the complaint, the Kota Consumer Court has issued notices to both Salman Khan and the manufacturing company of the product, directing them to submit their responses. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for November 27. Legal experts note that under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, celebrities can be held accountable for misleading advertisements and may face penalties if found guilty of endorsing false or exaggerated claims. Salman Khan’s upcoming projects On the professional front, Salman Khan is currently hosting the latest season of ‘Bigg Boss’. The actor is also busy shooting for his upcoming action drama ‘Battle of Galwan’, which, according to reports, is being planned for a June 2026 release. The case adds to the growing debate about celebrity responsibility in advertising, with consumer rights advocates urging stars to exercise greater discretion before associating with products that could harm public health.
