Skopje-based Komunalna Higiena (Communal Hygiene) PE Director Sabahudin Rustemi has been detained over the waste situation in the capital. On Monday, following an order by the Skopje Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office, officers detained him and Aki Saiti, who’s also part of the PE’s management, that is, he heads the Waste Management Sector. As the institution said, the two people were detained on suspicion of crime according to Article 230 of the Criminal Code (endangering the environment and the nature with waste). Earlier on Monday, PM Hristijan Mickoski had stated that there would soon be a resolution to the waste issues in the capital. “I think there will be a resolution there”, he told journalists during a visit to 8 Septemvri (8 September) City General Hospital, adding that it would be very interesting for journalists covering that topic. In the coming days, the PM noted, trucks from other cities will continue to collect waste. Later on Monday, outgoing Skopje Mayor Danela Arsovska stated that Rustemi had been arrested over the garbage “chaos” that was being created precisely by Mickoski’s “criminal staff”. She added that the “Mickovist regime” and VMRO-DPMNE-controlled Interior Ministry was sowing fear before the second round of the elections.
