Luke Robinson On One Percent Club Origins

Footballer Luke Robinson has turned a joke from his Bermuda national team-mates into a thriving fitness venture after being ribbed for spending so much time in the gym.
Robinson, known for his relentless dedication to strength and conditioning training, was often spotted staying behind after training, putting in what he calls “the extras” to keep himself at peak performance on the pitch.
“At first, I’d be in the gym on my own, recording the session, and every now and again one of the other players would see me and join in,” Robinson, a winger or defender, told Bernews.
What started as solo graft soon caught on.
Team-mates began drifting into his sessions, such as Cole Hall, Dantè Leverock, J’Nai Butterfield-Steede and Reece Jones Jr, inspired by Robinson’s drive to gain even the smallest advantage.
“The other players would see me and another player walking to lunch from the gym and jokingly say, ‘Oh, you’re getting your extras in, looking for that one per cent,’” recalled Robinson, who has played for several English non-league clubs and Glacis United, a team in Gibraltar.
The joke stuck – and so did the habit.
“Gradually, over the course of the year, whenever we went away on a trip, the numbers grew from three to five, ten to 12. Eventually, we were all just getting after it and chasing that one per cent.”
From that spark, Robinson’s fitness brand, the One Percent Club, was born, built on the same philosophy that turned banter into a movement: the belief that the tiniest gains can make the biggest difference.
The 26-year-old, who splits his time between Bermuda and England, has expanded his business into one-on-one coaching, working with local players of all ages, whether on the pitch at BFA Field or in the gym at Apex Physio in Hamilton.
He helped more than 40 male and female players over the summer, refining their skills and techniques through specific drills and positional training.
“First Ne-Jai Tucker came in – that was a start,” said Robinson, who previously worked at the Fit Box Gym in Brighton.
“Then Zeiko Lewis and Dantè wanted sessions – there was a snowball effect.
“Every week I was in Bermuda, I was fully booked morning and evening.
“I must thank Dantè, who let me link up with his DaRock Elite Academy at BFA Field – he really helped me get my feet on the ground, using his equipment.
“Craig Brown, too, from Apex Physio, who allowed me to use his gym.”
Robinson, who holds a sports science and coaching degree from the University of Northampton and the University of Manchester, plans to return to the island during school holidays to continue working with players.
For now, he is recovering from a serious knee injury and developing the One Percent Club’s online arm, which offers personalised training and nutritional plans, weekly check-in videos and a private app for workout and nutrition tracking.
“My energy probably shifted after getting injured,” he admitted. “It’s given me time to focus on the One Per Cent Club.
“I’m trying to be the person I wish I had when I was younger, especially for the younger players.
“It’s not just about training; it’s knowing the importance of hard work and how that can relate to other areas of your life.
“I like to do things holistically – it’s about building the characteristics of an all-round successful person through sport, fitness and gym work.”
