BPS Warns Of “Sophisticated Email Scam” The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] is advising the public to “be on alert for a sophisticated email scam currently circulating locally.” A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service advises the public to be on alert for a sophisticated email scam currently circulating locally. “In this scam, individuals receive what appears to be a legitimate email from an entity promoting itself as ‘SynergyBda Project.’ These messages contain links that, once you click on them, can give scammers access to your email account. “Once access is gained, fraudsters use the compromised email to send instructions to other employees or associated parties, such as accountants, administrative staff, or trustees, requesting that funds be transferred to an account they control. “These fraudulent emails may appear genuine, often including the sender’s usual signature and writing style. However, the requests are typically urgent in tone and may lack expected details about what the payment is for. “The BPS advises all businesses and individuals to take the following precautions: Be cautious of unexpected emails, even those appearing to come from familiar or trusted sources. Do not click on unfamiliar links or attachments. Verify all requests for fund transfers or sensitive information, preferably by telephone or in person, before taking any action. Enable multi-factor authentication on your email accounts to reduce the risk of unauthorized access. Report suspicious emails immediately to your Information Technology department or service provider. “Anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to this type of scam should contact the Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit at 295-0011 or via the BPS community reporting portal. “The BPS reminds the public that taking a few moments to confirm a request could prevent significant financial loss.”
