Commanders Make Shocking Decision on Starter

The Washington Commanders’ offense is set to look very different heading into their Week 3 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, with Jayden Daniels being sidelined with a knee injury. But interestingly, this isn’t the only notable change for the Commanders’ offense going into the game.
Commanders left guard Brandon Coleman has been a staple on the offensive line in Washington throughout his first two seasons, starting 12 games for the team in 2024, along with starting in the team’s first two games in 2025.
But in Week 3, Coleman will be watching the game from the sidelines despite coming into the game at full health.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Coleman has been named a health inactive for Sunday’s matchup.
In his place, veteran guard Chris Paul, who hasn’t started for the organization since the 2023 season, will start in Coleman’s place, according to ESPN Commanders reporter John Keim.
This move adds to the shuffling at the guard position for the Commanders heading into Week 3, as Andrew Wylie is set to start his first game of the 2025 season at right guard instead of Nick Allegretti.
It seems as if this decision to make changes at both guard positions is directly correlated with the Commanders’ struggles to keep Jayden Daniels clean, which seemingly contributed to his injury.
Thus far this season, Daniels has been sacked seven times, the third most of any quarterback through the first two games of the year.

Keeping Marcus Mariota upright will certainly be a key for the Commanders going into Sunday’s matchup. So it will be interesting to see whether Andrew Wylie and Chris Paul are able to better help do just that.
If they can give Mariota some time in the pocket, we have certainly seen that Mariota is capable of having some great moments in the spurts that he has been called upon to do so, starting 74 games over the course of his ten-year NFL career.
