Comedian Guy Branum has slammed Delta Airlines after claiming he was hit by a fellow passenger for being ‘too fat’ – and that nothing was done about it.
The comedian, 49, shared a video to Instagram following a flight from New York to Los Angeles, in which he said he was berated by the man sitting next to him for being overweight. He criticized the airline for not handling the situation better.
In the clip, Branum retold the story, before cutting to footage from the aircraft with his irate seatmate.
‘He elbowed me because he believes I am too fat to be sitting there,’ Branum says in the clip he recorded on the plane.
‘Well, who wouldn’t believe that,’ his disgruntled seatmate said as he laughed and looked away.
Branum then asked, ‘Would you be happy if I elbowed you back?’ to which the man replied: ‘There’s not a lot of room here for me.’
‘I paid for this seat too,’ he continued, with Branum interjecting to say he also paid for his seat.
The seatmate then asked if he would share the armrest, which resulted in a squabble over who has the right to claim it.
Branum said he told a passing flight attendant that the seatmate had hit him, with his fellow passenger arguing it was because he was overweight.
He claimed a member of ground-staff on board the aircraft at the time spoke to the waring passengers before swapping the seatmate with a woman across the aisle in exchange for some miles.
Branum said he was also asked to delete the footage he had recorded of the incident – which he declined to do.
‘Fat people shouldn’t be waiting for some future moment when we’ll be worthy of traveling and living our lives,’ he ended the clip.
‘On Sunday a guy hit me on a plane, and Delta didn’t throw him off the flight or have him arrested because they were too busy determining if I was too fat or not. (The flight crew was amazing and supportive, but the Red Coat [a ground-based passenger service agent] treated me like an object),’ he furiously captioned the clip.
Instagram users flooded the comments with support for Branum, some sharing their own stories.
‘The airlines make teeny seats, literally no one is comfortable in them,’ one responded. ‘I was in the middle in economy plus this weekend, and at 165lbs, 5ft8in I was squished and we were all squished. This is corporate greed forcing us to all combat each other hunger games styles about our bodies when the airplane design is the issue.’
‘My jaw is on the floor, what a trash way to treat another human,’ one astonished user wrote. ‘The airlines are causing this issue by making seats impossibly small.’
‘God. Awful. I’m so sorry this happens to us. I was at a concert last week and became very quickly aware that the people beside me were not happy with my presence. Like sorry I’m a big b***h but I deserve to take up space,’ one user wrote.
The airline told the Daily Mail, ‘Delta sincerely appreciates the actions of our crew and customers for deescalating this situation. We apologize to our customers for the delay and thank them for their understanding.
‘Delta’s Customer Care team is reaching out to speak directly with our customer as we look into his claims.
