Iowa and Oregon met in a battle of ranked teams at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday. The Ducks were able to walk into a hostile environment and leave with a win, defeating the Hawkeyes with a last-second field goal. The game was hard-fought on the field as it poured rain throughout, but some fans in the stands may have taken things beyond the realm of friendly competition. “Just an ugly scene at the end of the game,” said sports reporter Owen Siebring. “A group of Oregon players went to the north endzone to taunt the Hawkeye fans, and then the Iowa fans responded by hurling beer cans and other debris at the Ducks.” Siebring posted a video from Kinnick Stadium that shows trash – beer bottles, cans and more – coming from the sideline as Oregon players begin to run into the locker room. Oregon players have taunted opposing fans on the road after other games this season, most notably following the overtime win over Penn State. After that game, some Ducks players taunted fans as they began to file out of Beaver Stadium, spoiling the “whiteout” game in the massive stadium. Fans appeared to be divided over the matter on social media. Some believed that Oregon fans brought on the treatment by running to the stands in the first place, while others felt that the fans still crossed the line by throwing garbage at players. CFB Fans React to Oregon-Iowa Incident “Not the first time Oregon has done this. Iowa fans aren’t as nice as Penn State fans. This was bound to happen,” one fan said on social media. “Nothing worse than sore winners,” said another fan, while one more response felt that “taunting and beer throwing make college football great.” One Ducks fan chimed in to explain that Oregon players have a tradition of acknowledging traveling fans, and that they were simply returning the favor with their support. “At every road victory, the Ducks go to the edge of the field where the largest contingent of Duck fans are seated to salute the road Duck fans. They do not antagonize the home fans. This is a ridiculous post,” the fan said. The college football season is winding down, and teams like Oregon have their sights set on the College Football Playoff and potentially the national championship. We’ll see if they have what it takes to get there this season.
