Colin Farrell Reveals Why Tom Cruise Wasn't Happy With Him on Set

Actor Colin Farrell revealed his Minority Report co-star, Tom Cruise, wasn’t all that happy with him while filming the 2002 science-fiction film. Entertainment Weekly reported that Farrell spoke about his time shooting Minority Report, wherein he played Danny Witwer, on the October 28 episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Farrell said he was in awe while filming the movie because he was a fan of Cruise, the film’s director, Steven Spielberg, and its music composer, John Williams. He admitted, however, that he wasn’t always on his best behavior during the movie’s production. Farrell explained to Colbert that he decided to party during the early hours of his birthday, causing him to not feel his best on set. “I also had one of the worst days I’ve ever had on a film set [on Minority Report]. It was my birthday on May 31, and we were shooting, and I begged production — who did I think I was? — of a $120 million film if they [could] not have me working on my birthday,” recalled Farrell in the Late Show With Stephen Colbert interview. “So of course my pickup was 6 a.m. on May 31, and I got up to all sorts of nonsense the night before. And I remember getting into bed, and as soon as I turned off the light the phone rang and it was the driver, [who] said, ‘It’s 10 past 6.’ And I went, ‘Oh, s–t.'” He then said the film’s third assistant director recognized that he wasn’t in good condition. “I got out of the car and he went, ‘You can’t go to the set like this.’ And I went, ‘Just get me six Pacifico Cervezas and a packet of 20 [Marlboro] Red,'” said Farrell. “Now, listen, it’s not cool because two years later I went to rehab, right? But it worked in the moment. All the holy people that we look to on how to live a life would say the present is all that counts.” He then recalled having “a couple beers” before shooting a scene. “It was terrible. I will never forget the line I had that I couldn’t get out. It was, ‘I’m sure you’ve all grasped the fundamental paradox of pre-crime methodology.’ That was the line that started the scene,” said Farrell to Colbert, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. He also said he was encouraged to remove himself from set to “take a breath of fresh air.” The actor explained he declined to do so because he felt he’d be “under more pressure when [he’d] come back in to be better.” “And I went, ‘No, we’ll just go through it.’ We did 46 takes. Tom wasn’t very happy with me. Tom, who I love, was not very happy!” said Farrell to an amused Colbert. Colin Farrell Opened up About His Sobriety in a 2009 Interview Farrell opened up about his sobriety in a 2009 interview on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross. During the interview, he referenced that he went to rehab in 2005. The actor also shared that he began choosing not to drink, as opposed to having to refrain from alcohol, in 2007. “It wasn’t about white-knuckling. And I’m really grateful that it’s a choice,” said Farrell in the 2009 interview. He also shared how his life changed after he got sober. He said that he “started playing guitar” and began using a sauna every day. In addition, Farrell said he was able to focus on spending time with his eldest son, James, who was six at the time of the interview. He explained while he deeply loves his son, he had difficulty remaining present with James, who has Angelman Syndrome, because he wanted to party. “There were times when I was with my son, who I love more than I can even comprehend myself sometimes, and certainly defies explanation how much I love him, and there were times when I was with him and I was wondering, ‘How long do I have to be with him before the people around me will think that I’ve done a decent job so I can get pissed?’ It’s terrible,” said Collin, who shares James with his ex Kim Bordenave.
