Coatbridge rapper Specksy opens new Lanarkshire spud van alongside his dad

A Lanarkshire musician, who is well-known for his YouTube rap videos, has opened up a brand new baked potato van, which is touring around the local area.

Reece Muir, better known as Specksy, has had a busy start to his career in hospitality since launching his business, Specksy’s Spuds, alongside his dad Matthew Muir, 43, last weekend.

The 25-year-old was inspired by other similar businesses on social media, such as the Spud Bros whose popularity has exploded since positing videos to TikTok.

Knowing the success of others, Reece took to TikTok himself with a rap video showcasing his business venture, with the clip now having more than 300,000 views.

Reece told Glasgow Live: “I thought it was time for a change in having my own business. The music was just on the fun side of things, but I’ve came away from that for a couple of years.

“In that time, I was thinking on how to make a proper business, cause at the end of the day I wasn’t making Lewis Capaldi numbers.

“I love cooking and I love potatoes, so I put two and two together. Specksy’s Spuds came to my head one day and it hit straight away.

“I wanted to put my own twist on things, so I made the song, and I think we’re the first spud van in Scotland.

“Spud Bros are modern and I like how they do things. Now, when you see them, they’ve got shops all over, so I’m aspiring to do it the way they’re doing it.

“We’ve only done it a few times and it’s been a complete sell out with lines that don’t stop.”

Due to licensing, Reece can only operate his business in North Lanarkshire, but is hoping to soon be able to sell his spuds in more areas and even music festivals- something his fans are requesting.

And in the future, he hopes to make his business into a franchise, with Specky Spuds being sold all over the country.

Reece, from Coatbridge, added: “The long-term goal is to make it a franchise and take it as far as it can go. I want shops in high streets and multiple vans on the roads.

“That’s why I’ve put so much effort into the branding, the van, the song, the logo and the name, because in my eyes that’s what people can buy into.

“To me it’s a complete brand and that’s my vision. I don’t see why, without hard work and ensuring people are enjoying their food, it can’t happen.”

Reece will be offering the classic fillings you would associate with baked potatoes, like beans, cheese, tuna and chilli, but is also offering a steak filling too, which he says has “been a big hit” so far.
