Coachella announced their pop and electronic music heavy lineup last night, with headliners Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, and Colombian sensation Karol G as the main headliners. Anyma, half of melodic techno duo Tale of Us, is in the fourth headliner’s spot, with the flyer saying they’ll “present Æden,” usually meaning they’ll put on a special show headlining Saturday night at a side stage (ask me how long it took to figure out how to type ”Æ”).
Squeezed at the very bottom, the flyer announces “The Bunker Debut Of RADIOHEAD KID A MNESIA,” which will probably mean the group will perform from their Kid A Mnesia 2021 three-disc compilation that combines B-sides and outtakes from their albums Kid A and Amnesiac.
Tickets will go on sale this Friday at 11 a.m. PT at coachella.com, but we’d recommend signing in at least an hour early to get into the queue if you want to secure passes.
Coachella has gradually evolved from its punk and indie rock roots over the past — let’s be real — 20 years, so any oldhead who makes that complaint now needs to take some Centrum Silver.
Sabrina Carpenter and Bieber are at this point modern pop royalty. They both released their seventh albums this year, Carpenter’s Man’s Best Friend, and Bieber’s Swag, which he followed up with Swag 2, which gives him eight. Karol G, fresh off the release of her album Tropicoqueta in June, will bring her legions of fans and a much appreciated Latin sound. Other pop acts include TikTok darling Addison Rae, TikTok soundtrender PinkPantheress, and LA-based global girl group Katseye.
Electronic dance music has been an increasingly integral part of Coachella’s landscape with the Sahara tent, the indoor Yuma stage, the Do LaB, and the new Quasar stage all dedicated to dance. The number of electronic artists on this year’s lineup rivals that of full EDM festivals, and beyond Anyma, you’ll be able to catch: Disclosure, Moby, Marlon Hoffstadt, Gordo, HUGEL, Solomun, Adriatique, Boys Noize, Kaskade, Major Lazer, Subtronics, Mochakk, ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U — who’s blown up following a viral Boiler Room set (and will be in LA performing this weekend, and yes, I copied and pasted that one), Duke Dumont, Armin van Buuren x Adam Beyer, and many more, with many surprises to be expected.
Included are a mx of rock and indie elder statesmen and newcomers, like The Strokes, Turnstile, Royal Otis, WetLeg, SOMBR, Iggy Pop, Foster the People, Black Flag, and The Rapture (hey remember them?!).
There’s not a ton of rap and R&B, but notable inclusions are Young Thug — a favorite who most recently has made headlines for leaked jail calls where he opined on a laundry list of rap’s big names, Sexyy Red, Virginia coke rap pioneers Clipse, Long Beach’s very own R&B champ Giveon, Blood Orange, Labrinth, Davido and UK drill god Central Cee.
Other notable acts include Nine Inch Noize — a collab of Nine Inch Nails and German electronic producer Boys Noize, Ethel Cain — fresh off their squabble with Lana Del Rey, K-pop stars BIGBANG and French neo-funk outfit Dabuell.
LA favorites Bob Baker Marionettes will be making an appearance Friday.
