SAGINAW, MI - CMU Health’s endocrinology department will host its inaugural “The Sweet Truth -- Diabetes Wellness Fair” this week. The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the SVRC Marketplace ballroom, 203 S. Washington Ave. in Saginaw. The free event kicks off Diabetes Awareness Month and aims to provide education, resources, and support for individuals living with diabetes, their caregivers, and anyone interested in prevention, according to an announcement. Those who attend can take advantage of free health screenings, learn practical tips for diabetes management, and connect directly with local health professionals. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 38 million Americans are living with diabetes, and one in five don’t know they have it. In Michigan, the American Diabetes Association estimates that 12% of adults have the condition. “Our first-ever Diabetes Wellness Fair will highlight key aspects of diabetes care, including lifestyle, physical health, emotional well-being, and prevention, while promoting connection and bringing our community together,” Dr. Zeina Habib, a CMU Health endocrinologist, said in a statement. “Whether living with diabetes, supporting a loved one, or simply interested in learning more, this event will give individuals and families the resources and support they need to pursue their personal health goals with confidence,” the statement reads. The event is supported by CMU Health, Covenant HealthCare, the Saginaw County Health Department, BWell Saginaw, and MyMichigan Health. “Diabetes affects many families in our community,” Dr. Samuel Shaheen, president and chief executive officer of CMU Medical Education Partners, said in a statement. “This event is an opportunity to raise awareness, provide access to care, and empower people to take charge of their health.”
