Cleveland centenarians share how to live past 100

BEACHWOOD, Ohio — What does it take to live not just a long life, but a meaningful one? The Maltz Museum invites the community to explore that question during a special free program, “Longevity and Purpose: Keys for Living to 100 and Beyond,” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29. The event brings together two remarkable Clevelanders — Dr. Howard Tucker, a 103-year-old neurologist recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest practicing physician, and Albert Ratner, a philanthropic and business leader nearing his centennial. The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Michael Roizen, chief wellness officer emeritus at Cleveland Clinic and a national expert on longevity. Together, these three voices will share insights on how purpose, optimism and social connection can add years to life and life to years. Tucker attributes his longevity to curiosity, humor and compassion—along with personal rules like “don’t smoke, don’t hate and don’t retire unless you have to.” He believes hatred harms the person who harbors it more than anyone else. Having a reason to get up each morning, helping others and maintaining a sense of joy are central to his approach. “When you ask, ‘What can I do to help you?’” he said in a press release. “You make your own challenges feel lighter.” Roizen will complement their wisdom with the latest medical research on aging and health, sharing how lifestyle and medical advances can extend vitality and improve quality of life.
