Dear Editor, The Guyana Water Incorporated acknowledges the concerns raised by Ms Roshawna Pilgrim, a resident of Steve-dore Housing Scheme in the October 24, 2025 edition of the Stabroek News. GWI, supported by significant government investments in water treatment facilities nationwide, consistently ensures that the iron content in the water falls well below the maximum threshold outlined by the World Health Organisation (WHO), making it clear and reliably safe for consumption. On Friday, October 24, 2025, the GWI technical team visited Stevedore Housing Scheme to investigate the quality of water, collecting water samples from several households, including that of Ms Pilgrim. It was discovered that the water flowing from the standpipes of each household, including Ms Pilgrim’s, is clear and that the iron content met WHO standards, contrary to the assertions made by her in the Stabroek News letter. Stevedore Housing Scheme is being served by the recently commissioned New Cummings Lodge Water Treatment Plant, which was designed to treat 12 million litres of water per day. Additionally, GWI employs a rigorous and consistent flushing process to remove any residual iron content from existing transmission mains and to enhance the provision of treated water to residents. GWI recognises that access to clean water is a human right and as such remains steadfast in its efforts to ensure that all Guyanese have safe, clean and reliable water access.
