New Delhi: Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu on Saturday announced a detailed investigation into the glitches in Delhi Airport's air traffic control.While announcing a detailed root-cause analysis to be undertaken by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to prevent recurrence of such glitches in the future, he also instructed officials to plan for system advancements like additional or fallback servers.More than 800 flights were delayed and many cancelled on Friday as officials at Delhi's air traffic control towers lost their ability to use the automatic message switching system (AMSS), which is the key communication link between different airlines and other airports, transmitting thousands of messages regarding flight plans or weather updates among others.When systems like the AMSS suffer outage, controllers have to follow manual procedures, like noting down flight details, calculating separations and coordinating through voice communication.This significantly reduced the speed of operations at the airport, which is one of Asia's busiest, handling around 70 flights per hour. The cascading effect resulted in delays at other airports. India's largest airline IndiGo had barely half of its flights on time.Live EventsThe software of the system is made by the Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), a government-owned firm, and was in the process of being phased out.The union of air traffic controllers warned a Parliamentary Affairs Committee early this year about performance degradation in automation systems, citing lags and slowness particularly at high-traffic airports like Delhi and Mumbai.
