‘Cinderella Grey’ gallops past the other sports documentaries

Great athletes demand equally dazzling documentaries. That was the case with 2020’s “The Last Dance,” a miniseries chronicling Michael Jordan — arguably the greatest basketball player ever — and his cultural impact.Nothing in the genre has touched it since — until now. This year, the spotlight falls on one of Japan’s most beloved athletes, the racehorse Oguri Cap, a superstar stallion of the late 1980s.“Umamusume: Cinderella Grey,” which premiered in spring and whose second half begins airing Oct. 5 on TBS, is arguably the best look at a peak athlete’s achievements since “The Last Dance.” Only here, the equine legend is reimagined in anime form as a teenage schoolgirl who must perform upbeat idol-pop songs after every victory.
